Here is my question that hopefully somebody can answer…

Please read carefully if you’re going to attempt to solve my problem…

I’m editing a show for an SD broadcast cable channel. The show was shot on the Sony Z1U at 60i not on frame or 24p mode. So, when you view it in DV down converted mode on a television it looks like interlaced… You know the home video look, not the cool “film look” time thing that you do on with a shutter of 30 on the camera or 24p or frame mode, I’m talking the interlaced looking look like on a regular dv cam without all those special modes…

    HERE’S MY PROBLEM…

I really want this show when it broadcasts to have that cool film look. So what can I do on my end before giving it to the online guys to ensure that it has that look? Do I run a de-interlace filter over the whole thing? Do I export a HDV720p 30 sequence? Does anybody know what I’m talking about?

I believe the Nattress plugin suite would help you best.

    Look for the standards converter

I gotta say – these are questions that should have been dealt with in the pre production stage and planning of this show. If the producers wanted a non-interlaced look, it should have been shot non-interlaced. The fact it was shot in 60i tells me that that was possibly the plan from the start and so maybe that plan should be respected? Or, maybe there was poor planning?

In any case, there are a variety of methods to try to reduce the interlacing or remove it complete. You can simply use the deinterlace filter in Final Cut Pro but it might not give you the look you’re trying to achieve. Also you might consider Motion or Shake if you have them.

Keep in mind that you are going to lose resolution when you deinterlace, and depending on the method you use it might not look very good.

It’s not the end of the world if it goes up interlaced on air because that’s what they ordered, but they’re trusting me to give it a nice look. Is there any kind of filter or something that can give it the look as if they had shot frame mode on the Z1U originally?

Sean, Chris has answered this. Natress’ filters have a great de-interlace.

If you want to spend more take a look at Magic Bullet.
