    Hi Jasmine,

If you are getting the DVD image of the combined DVD/VHS player then it sounds like the cable is working and you are getting a signal across which is good. There is something in your VHS player that you have to set I would guess to get the output from the VHS not the DVD. Maybe try reading the manual to find out what that would be? I never had one like that.

It does sound like your signal is getting through which is a start. If it is in black and white that would tend to indicate that your Decklink card is set for component not composite. Maybe check your prefs again. Make sure it is set for composite in.

    Good luck!

    Hi Jasmine,

Use the “Y” cable of your Decklink analog in. Then go to your OS x system preferences and click on the decklink settings on the bottom. Set video input to “composite” from component.

That will get you your video in. Unfortunately VHS is not a very stable video signal and you may find it breaking up or aborting the capture.

I good way to do it if you can is to transfer it to Betacam or something similar first, then digitize from that. The TBC in the deck will assure that the signal input to your Decklink will be stable; even if it breaks up it will not abort the capture.

The trick for capturing vhs into your betacam deck is to feed the vhs into the composite input, then use the loopthrough (turning the termination off) to feed into the sync (ref) in on the deck.

    Good luck!

It likes to see a signal on the video in but you aren’t obliged to capture it.

    HI,

apple 8 bit uncompressed is the right codec. But don’t forget to set the frame size and the rest of it or you will still need to render.

    Good luck!

    Joe,

My bet would be that you’ve missed some little thing in your sequence settings that is not matching the material you are editing. Look carefully at the frame size, pixel aspect, field dominance, and codec. There is no reason why you should have to render this material with the proper settings…

Not sure why an upgrade would change those settings though…

Also remember to try to create a new sequence and drag a clip into it once you have the settings right.. if the frame size is different than the material FCP will automatically try to scale it to fit.. so even after you get the sequence set up correctly the material may still want rendering if you put it into the sequence before it was set up correctly.. if you know what I mean.

I hope that comment is of some use. Good luck.

There is not really a good way to do this that I know of and I’ve tried. You can download the Media100 software codec from their website and that will allow you to play and edit your media 100 material in FCP.

But how to get your edited sequences in to FCP? If you try hard enough you will be able to export an EDL that final cut will read. It takes some fooling around. But then how will you relink the media to that sequence? Aside from laboriously linking each shot by hand I don’t have the answer for that.

In the end, the easiest thing to do might be to import the edl and then re-capture all the material… Try exporting different types of EDL, I seem to reacall that M100 offers different flavors. As a test try just one shot until you get it to work.

    Anyhow good luck.

  • That worked. Thanks Luke.

PAL and NTSC certainly do exist; as standard definition analog signals. They don’t exist in HD …

If your client is in North America they will likely want 24p or 60i while in Europe they want 25p or 50i so though PAL and NTSC theoretically no longer exist in HD we still have the frame rate hangover and no worldwide standardization… Typical of the TV business. I guess we will survive this too.
