Hey Dan, I’m trying to use this idea here to animate the offset of a Trim Path so that when I duplicate each instance of the path, they animate at random speeds, but putting this expression on the Offset parameter yields an error “Function substr is undefined.” Any idea how to make this work?

Perfect!! Thank you so much Xavier. That’s some genius expression writing without testing.

I thought it would be something like that based on your Random Motion examples on your site. I just can’t speak expressions well enough to make it work. You are the best, Dan! Thanks!

Hey Dan, this helped solve a huge headache I was dealing with tonight, but now I’m wondering if it’s possible to randomize the segment time for each square? Thank you for all your amazing help!

  • Yeah, that’s the way. I put all my Ray Traced stuff in it’s own precomp to avoid working in Ray Traced comps. Really limiting, but the advantages of using the Ray Trace engine are pretty sweet at the moment. Pretty soon tho, nobody will be using it when the C4D integration with shape layers comes out. Imagine using bend deformers with extrusion and rendering faster than the Ray Trace engine?

Could also try the “Echo” effect with some creative tweaking. I’ve used that several times to get a “swipe” look on motion.

    Hey Lazzo,

a handful of things could be contributing to poor playback. Blue bar indicates cached frames to disk, not in RAM. If your cache drive is a fast SSD, 6gbs, then it should playback somewhat ok. I suggest go watching this https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/atv/cs6-tutorials/global-performance-cache.html

Thing is, if you’re in CC 2015, there are several playback issues being fixed with each update. I’m not sure how much better it is on Mac, but it seems to play fine for me on my PC. Mac seems to get the grunt of most of the playback problems.

    Good luck!

Have you tried RubberHose from Battleaxe? It’s like the most perfect solution for this problem. https://www.battleaxe.co/rubberhose/

You made these masks manually in AE? I would try creating a grid in Illustrator with boxes at the size you want and then use your text (convert to shapes first) to “cut” the grid shape. That’s what I’ve done in the past when I wanted to turn something into cubes.

Aha! I see now. It’s just the last two lines that change. I didn’t think about the ease expression values.

    Thanks Dan!
