  • I don’t have time to watch the tutorial right now, but take it from an avid AE user: Instead of creating a new solid and copying the effect over, try duplicating the layer. Can’t hurt to try.

  • Why not just duplicate the solid with the effect on it?

There’s this handy little script for that from @aescripts – https://aescripts.com/bake-parented-transform/

It’s going to follow the position of whatever it’s linked to. I’m sure someone smarter could think of a way to delay that, but if I wanted to do what you’re talking about, I’d animate the pencil, then copy the position keyframes to the Write-On effect brush position. You’ll probably have to line it up with the pencil tip or where you want it, then offset the keyframes enough so that it starts after the pencil. You may have to delete some of the keyframes so that the Write-On effect isn’t drawing them where you don’t want them.

That’s a very manual way around it. I recently bought Speed Lines on AEscripts which does what you want here with so much more control.

And there is always the scripted approach to Plexus. I totally forgot about creative dojo’s array connector. https://creativedojo.net/store/dojo-array-connector-script/

FWIW, last time I asked Satya about near and far cut off, he said he’s implementing that into the next version. But yeah, that helps none of us now, I know. Just good news 🙂

Plexus will let you use lights to cast colors onto the dots and lines you choose. What Cassius is alluding to is that you could use the lights to shade the front half of the object and create a matte that way. It’s not a very good fix if you end up trying to move the camera around. In fact, if there aren’t any camera movements at all, I’d just fake the whole look to begin with.

Thanks Dan, but that gets the circle to start at 0 degrees and then roll forward the appropriate amount. What I’m trying to do is get the circle to end on 0 degrees. That way I can inflect any amount of bounce back using just the position and not worry about getting the rotation right.

Thanks for taking a crack at it! But it still ends up settling in a wonky rotation angle.

  • Editing vertex points on a mask can be troublesome to begin with. There’s an option to “preserve constant vertex count when editing masks” in the preferences, but I’m not the one to explain that here. You might start googling about it. There seems to be a load of info on the net about it.

There is a script that may help you and worth looking in to. It’s KeyTweak by Mathias Mohl. Check it out here – https://aescripts.com/keytweak/
