    As for passing an object behind the E3D layer, you have to have the layer passing behind your E3D layer beneath it in the stack since E3D is applied to a 2D layer and doesn’t interact with any other layer in the physical space. So short answer, pay attention to your layer stack.

    Connect layers is really fun and easy to use. Watch the 9 minute tutorial on that link Todd shared and you’ll be set to rock and roll. Just make sure you use the rope script. It uses rotobezier lines to give the curve you’re looking for. Basically it connects points that you can of course animate. The lines are shape layers, from which you can of course create dotted lines 🙂 Victory on all accounts!

  • Todd’s posting basic articles about After Effects that most people neglect to read. I would also add, do yourself another favor and follow his blog. If you’re not sure about that, find out who Todd Kopriva is and then you’ll understand why it may be to your advantage 🙂

    Personally, I’ve always avoided multi-processing until I upped my RAM. You’re opening up 8 instances (12 in my case) of AE which takes quite a bit of RAM to do it smoothly and quickly, well, running AE off an SSD might help speed the spool up time.

    Also, NEVER do a RAM preview with MP on. Doesn’t matter how fast your system is, it’s just faster not to.

    that is really strange. I’ve seen flickering from plugins like 3d stroke and Element, but it doesn’t look like you’re using any of those, unless there’s an instance of one somewhere else on the timeline. Have you tried purging the memory and cache? Do that, then try a RAM preview. If it previews correctly, there’s likely an issue with whatever plugin you’ve used somewhere on the timeline.

    Couldn’t the AE team try to keep up a little better on newly released cards and send out updates for them? I have a cloud membership and would assume WITH that, like Photoshop has updates to support newer/more camera models, etc, that AE would receive updates for newly released hardware.

    If I’m thinking correctly, one node uses rotation/orientation only and no POI, right? In that case, you could use a one node camera like most people use camera parented to null for planar motion only.

    I’m assuming you’d like to have all those layers horizontal at all times, as in, when they begin rotation and start to arc, then gradually turn upside down, you don’t want that, right? So there is a simple solution to this. Precomposing would be a good idea if you want to arrange your layers in a radial pattern, like all the layers are perpendicular to the path all around the path. If that’s not what you’re looking for – try this:

    1. Arrange your PSDs where you want them in your cirlce.
    2. Create an object Null (Layer>New>Null). That will appear in the center of your comp by default.
    3. Parent all your PSDs to the Null object.
    4. Opt/Alt click the stopwatch on one of the PSDs rotation parameter.
    5. Enter this expression -parent.transform.rotation. Push Enter or ESC.
    6. Right click that rotation parameter you just set the expression to and click ‘Copy Expression Only’.
    7. Select all the other PSDs and do a paste action on all of them to apply that expression to the rest of your layers.
    8. Animate the Object Null’s rotation parameter.

    this got me wondering about an expression for the rotation on the orientation for a 3d layer. when he asked about keeping the subsubsub layer level, I was thinking of an orbiting type layer and THEN noticed they were all 2D. So I’m wondering Dan, what would you do for a layer parented to a layer’s orientation in 3D space to keep it facing the camera all the time but with an expression? I’ve wondered this in the past because when the objects move past the camera, I’d rather have them facing the direction they’re moving and not at the camera anymore.

    So basically layers orbiting one layer in 3d space using the orientation or even just one of the rotation parameters ALL facing the camera.

    Now that would be cool 🙂

    To link all those belt pieces together I basically animated one link in the belt, then duplicated it to get enough copies to make a continual belt loop. You have to offset the layers one at a time so they don’t all overlap each other of course. To get a tornado look, I’d create a motion path for the first object, set key frames for the speed and motion, then go about duplicating them and offsetting the layers to create a chain of sausages. The problem I forsee with your example is your 2d layer won’t look so awesome on a 3d path, which is what I think the tornado text effect is. So there would be some trickery there to create that tornado look without getting paper thin layers at some point, unless you don’t mind that.

    As for the splattering and cooking effect, the fastest way I can think of doing that is by hand. You’d have to create some drops, like grease drops spurting off and just animate it one frame at a time. That’s a lot easier than it sounds because you only need maybe 5 or 6 frames worth of grease drops spurting off, per drop anyway. For sizzling on the actual sausages, I’d probably handle that frame by frame as well, but do it on one sausage, precomp it, duplicate the precomp a couple times, then tweak about 3 or 4 copies of sizzling sausages, THEN use that precomped sausage as my first object on my tornado path. Just vary up your duplicates here and there to randomize the sizzling look or it’ll look like too many clones sizzling at the same time, or just slightly offset.
