In your Text>Layout tab there is a Path Options>Path Shape drop-down. Choose circle, adjust your radius.

Trash your preferences first, then launch FCP and reconnect, and maybe try a “Save Project As…” and give it a new name. See what that does for you.

Yes, Retiming in Motion is great for doing this. No keyframing necessary, it’s Retiming “behaviors” set to in/out-points.

I hate math too, that’s why I stop at grade school level math 🙂
But seriously, video is pretty much ALL math. It’s the incredibly brilliant engineers and coders that put FCP and like programs together, and then us “creatives” come along and complain that FCP isn’t running on the iPhone yet, or that our filters should do this or that. I’m still in complete awe that we have the tools we have. It’s all magic to me! I’m just happy I get to wield the wand. I feel like Mickey Mouse in Fantasia.

Whoever mentioned Broadcast Safe should be a Sequence Setting, that was a good idea… but what if you only wanted to apply to certain clips w/in your sequence and not all, etc?
It makes the most sense as a filter, and the easiest way to understand filters (for me) is to think back to grade school math – The PEMDAS rule. 4×3-2 is not the same as 3-2×4. Order of operations.

You were on the right track with Motion it sounds like… You can scale with keyframes, or grow/shrink behavior. You just need to apply the Hold Frame behavior (being mindful of your in and out points for that, set your IN exactly where you want it to freeze) or if using keyframes, just add a bezier (in the keyframes tab) to ease out.
In FCP, it’s all in your Motion tab. Set keyframe for 100%, further down the timeline set a 2nd keyframe for 200% (it should now scale). Right-click on the 2nd keyframe and designate “smooth”. Now you have a bezier-handle that will ease out your motion move (feel free to adjust).

Knoll ( Red Giant) is most likely the culprit as the crash report reads:
“The application Motion quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by the KnollLight Factory plug-in”, and considering it does this only shortly after applying the filter, I’m thoroughly convinced it’s the plug-in.I haven’t contacted Red, but read on another forum that this error is known, just not solved. Using latest updated version.
I think it happens only in multi-layer 3d projects. It crashes my project every time I simply apply the filter, but it didn’t do this to a simple 1 layer 2d project… it appears to be a project size/density issue. Knoll Light plug-in works great and flawlessly in FCP for me (haven’t tried it in AE).
Was just curious if others have experienced the same issue.

Photoshop is essential. I’ve never worked with it, but I know there’s a free photo editing app called Gimp that works with psd’s.
In the meantime, you could “crop” or “mask” out the black borders.

You “can” move/scrub through the timeline with 1 key.
Space bar plays. J, K, L keys give you forward, pause, reverse playback. Up + down jump to edits. Mouse scroll-ball scrubs (if you have a scroll- ball mouse). L/R Arrow keys move frame by frame. H gives you a hand. Home/end jumps to front/end of timeline. +/- expands/shrinks timeline or windows. You can find all your short cuts in Tools>Keyboard Layout or customize your own.

I agree, dips to black/white are good, and the jump cut is not nearly as taboo as it has been stigmatized to be. You can always scale in 5-10% on the shot so the composition between edits is slightly adjusted (add a tiny bit of sharpening if you scale in).
What is the interview about? Just ’cause you didn’t get cutaways in the interview environment, doesn’t mean you’re empty-handed. The internet is loaded with imagery! There’s plenty of stock image sites out there.
