June 17, 2009 at 5:17 pm in reply to: Convert from Quicktime Movie to Windows Media FileI believe Mpeg Streamclip can do this for you too… and Visual Hub (if it still exists out there) is one of the most user friendly programs I’ve ever used for conversions… there’s even several websites that do media conversion now too “google” media convert and you’ll find a few (I’ve never used them, not sure how reliable they are, probably slow).

Export Selection any layers that are 2D and Import into Project as flattened Quicktimes. You can just make the old layers invisible after you’ve imported the new QTs. You should probably be able to reduce the number of layers and may have better luck exporting.

I was born in 81, so my memories of the 80s are slightly fuzzy, but that doesn’t mean I can’t chime in…
At NAB 2 years ago, the editor of Borat talked about how he got that Kazakhstan News Channel look seen at the beginning of the film. He said he basically did what you mentioned, which was VHS dubs, downgrading the film — I think he dubbed down 3 times or more.

The main issue is a communication problem between our Mac Pros (with ATTO cards) fibred to the Facilis Terrablock storage system. The Facilis website mentions problems with 10.5.6:
_____________________________Support Notice
Apple OS version 10.5.6 is not supported by Facilis Technology on older Mac Pro workstations that use the Expansion Slot utility. The ATTO Celerity card normally in a x4 slot will default to a x1 slot and cause problems with fibre channel communication.
Until further notice, the workaround for this problem is to revert the workstation back to 10.5.5.
Thank you.
Facilis Technology Support
_______________________________After working w/ our IT dept and Facilis, we were able to troubleshoot around the error and get our drives back online… The cause of error is still unknown, but problem is temporarily fixed. We will try to weather the storm until Facilis updates rather than revert our OS. But probably not prepared to go to 10.5.7 until Facilis is able to comply with the newer OS versions. For months, we ran 10.5.6 w/out knowing of the issue and didn’t have problems until now… Hopefully, its not a frequent type of error.
Thoughts?

Run all updates. Run Disk Warrior if you have it (or something comparable). Clear desktop of clutter (eats RAM). Flatten groups into Quicktimes (if no alterations are needed – or alter/replace later). Make invisible all groups/layers, filters, behaviors, that you can live w/out seeing while working. Draft quality and 1/4 view til end of proj. Set play range to 10 sec at a time (or thereabouts) on only the portion of the project you are working on. Save often. Hope that helps!

[Arnie Schlissel] “FCP does not send filters to Motion. At all. Ever.”
Not entirely true. The FCP “Smoothcam” filter does ride along for the roundtrip and becomes the “Stabilize” filter. I believe there is one other FCP filter that can be sent to Motion, but can’t think of it off the top of my head.
So to clarify, almost all FCP filters do not get sent to Motion.

Definitely use the book, it comes with exercise files on DVD.
Lynda.com is also an investment worth considering. Its not free, but it “pays” off if you use it.

Just size them as small as you want them, or you can even overlap windows (cover up a window w/ another). Go to Window > Arrange > Save Window Layout so you can return to this setting anytime. Hit CTL+U when you want to change back to standard.

Looking forward to Sherlock Holmes in post-production right now…
