OK…so now with everyone’s feedback, is it absolutely time to upgrade? How feasible is Meridien in today’s market? We still acquire most of our stuff in SD 16×9 Betacam.

My issues/quesions are: is a potential move to some sort of solid state media (acquisition – P2, XD) out of the question? Could it work with those files?

How about upgrading the PC? We have the old 64-bit PCI cards, and apparently it isn’t easy to find a *new* faster PC that can support the old AVID hardware.

Anyone have any experience with these issues?

Quick question on codec…has anyone had more luck with one codec over another? – Apple AVC vs Sorenson AVC?

OK…I understand that Premier Pro CAN understand any codec/container…etc. My question is, in the interest of a smooth workflow, what codec does Premier work natively at? Certainly not uncompressed, right? It has to have a codec that when you digitize video that it puts it in a certain container with a certain codec.

IE – AVID – Quicktime container with the codec depending upon which system you are working in – Meridien – DNxHD.

What is Premier’s native format?

Maybe I’m not asking the right question…I’ve not worked with Premier before.

Thought I would add my 2 cents.

As much as I love AVID, AVID does not ulitlize transfer modes. I’ve seen a plug-in…

used to offer AVX plug-in’s to simulate transfer modes…but it’s not on their site anymore. You may find luck with someone else.

If that’s not feasable…you could export your material same as source from the AVID and bring it into AFX and do the final render to your AVID codec from there.

I do that alot, and make a submaster…keeping my original media in the timeline so I have a TC reference…pretty clumsy, but it’s what we AVID people have to do I guess.

So my next logical question is…what is a good GOP structure if file size isn’t a factor?

I frames = 6? 12? 15? 18? (those are my only options)
P frames = depends on my I frame selection

using sorenson. I’m guessing the answer I’ll get is, “depends what the source material is”. The video is a blended…”dissolvey” historical video with old images mixed with moving animated backgrounds. Needs to be keyframed often, I would guess.

Hey Promoboy,

I tried the workspace idea…it didn’t work on our system (MedComp v11.0). Through some deeper research, I found a workaround…I’ll lay it out here for anyone who reads this in the future.

Open the settings tab in the project window, go down to the bottom for the setting: *Video input* double click, and you can change the input to composite/component/SDI/etc. Change to which setting you want, then go to Special -> Site Settings. With the Site Settings box open, drag the *Video Input* from the settings tab into the Site Settings box, this now changes the default for creating new projects as the video input being what you want it to be.

Hope that helps someone in the future!
