I am not the product manager for this camera and therefore I am going to redirect this to Jeff Merritt who stops in here on occasion. Overall, I would say that the DVCPRO HD codec is at least more standardized out there in the production market in as much it has been delivering for now 6 years. The fact that it is I-Frame only 4:2:2 and the HDX900 camera sports a 2/3″ imager.
But I think you will be best served by a demonstration of both cameras and use them both in the types of shooting that you do, and then bring that footage all the way through the editing system.
Perhaps Jeff will also join in.

It is the item that tells the computer of any spanned clips.

No, there should have been one for each, but the Avid may have rejoined the spanned clips and thus the purpose was served.

What do you mean by discprencies? That doesn’t help me understand your situation.

In an actual CONTENTS folder there are subfolders, called Video, audio, icon, proxie, xml, and voice. On the HVX not all folders will have info in them. Much of the linking comes from the XML. A better bet to insure editability and still view the footage, would have been to keep the Contents Folders intact and view them one card at a time.

I am not seeing your directory here, you are saying that everything has been dumped into one folder and then you say this. I am confused. You may need to edit this on an PC Avid. Go Import P2 and that which can be imported will show up, then import all. If the computer can put them together from this big pot of soup it will, if not, then you will have to edit on an PC Avid.

Well it is very difficult to delete clips as you first have to select the clip, then open a menu, selct delete and then confirm you decision. Most people would have a tough time passing through 3 cognitive operations to erase something by mistake. I will guarantee that once it is gone, it is gone!

Hi,
The Firestore and HVX combo whould be fine. Just make sure that you organize the clips as P2 before you transfer off the dire, That is an actual step that you have to make in the menus of the Firestore, and then transfer to another hard drive. Only after you have transferred the Contents folder should you try and import that footage to FCP. Maintain your Contents folder/MXF files as these are the MASTER footage.

This is a gray market scam. They will not let you out the door for that amount of money. You will have to buy something else, like the useless $500 extended warranty, not the word extended. You won’t have a warranty here in the US for the first year. You will buy filters that vignette. You will buy enough useless add-ons that won’t work to get the price up to where it needs to be, about $5395. Buy it from an authorized dealer.
Oh and if that doesn’t convince you, go to http://www.resellerratings.com and look up their customer satisfaction history. You won’t be able to return any of those useless accessories that don’t work.

This is not a choice in HD, only SD, and it is really referencing a filter for excess resolution on an NTSC monitor. That monitor can only display about 350 lines, the SDX can genrate close to 450 in vertical. So in interlace mode it filters off the excess resolution, in Progressive, it is retained for film out or bump to HD.
The camera is always capturing progressive as long as you are in 24P or 30P, and we are referencing the 480i domain part of this camera and the SDX900.

Hi Mitch,
At this time the only P2 viewer available is on the front end of the HD Log Program offered by Imagine Products. I think that the HD Log does for their customers the very thing that any person moving into the data based domain needs to do, and that is create an archive and have that be searchable.
I know that Imagine is having conversations with the guys at Quantum, who have a new DLT device that have an MXF aware part of the drive and so when it starts to stash the content, it keesp the MXF stuff up front and so when I go to search for it agains the MXF, it is up front and in the database, and I can extract just that clip I want by TC. So the way I see it, is that if you realize that you need to think archive, you get a very nice archiving system with HD Log and a P2 viewer on top of that, and it is faster than the P2 viewer that we offer on the PC.

[Paul Webster] “We work in a scripted workflow. We connect our DVCAM via Firewire to a Powerbook. We then launch FCP, and open the Log and Capture window. As each shot is taken, we mark an in and an out, scene number, description and whether the shot is ‘good’. At the end of the day, we end up with 100-150 shots all logged, ready to digitize. We don’t commit a frame to tape without logging it.”
But you could continue to work this way with the HVX.

This sounds like having to review footage that we really don’t need to see again until we start to edit.”
Or you could with each Card you load in go thorugh and do the same logging info as you did before, just in 4 or 8 GB loads. End of the day it is all logged, then back-up and ready to edit.

It really depends on how you look at it. Frankly I would be logging as I go but those that want to sort it out later can work that way. The very least bit of organization in working with the Cards, and off loading them will pay off, and you can name the file for each of the cards by the scene name. You do set up a sense of organization and yes it can save time in digitizing and you don’t have to archive the bad takes, unless you want to.
While the universal clip name keeps things from being recorded over, you can name your clips during the shoot, via the SD card loading or as I said once you are in the ingest and transfer. You can set up with HD Log the ability to make the notes in the MXF, which I regard as the MASTER and then morror the drive for back-up.
Anyhow if you are capturing as you go with the capture now window, that obviously moves away for the MXF and more to the XML and there the HD Log could also be used.
