yes and no acturally. You can Install Final Cut on a externall harddrive, but you need to Installe the operating system as well for it to Work. I decided that solution when i upgraded to Final Cut Studio. My reason of doing so was to have a setup with Final Cut Studio and almost nothing else for Stability. I would not install anything put systemsupgrades and Final Cut Studio upgrades on that disc. It has work flawlessley until now. At One time I had to compress some huge files and I was able to borrow a considerbly faster Machine from my work. Up starting My external Harddrive up on That machine I was Asked to inter my serial number again. That was then again nessesary when I reconnected it to my own computer

Great news Walter the greate thing about this forum is informations like that from people who earns their bread and butter using the applications. Not some journalist testing the speed of different applications without knowing weather application x is easier to use or learn to use than application y. Regarding the huge speed difference you experienced in After Effect. Was that with the stock graphic card or did you buy it with a faster card installed. My guess is the stock card do to your looming deadline. Will you keep it until the new Intel Pro mac arrives or will you use it for After Effect rendering until After Effect goes universal.

  • It do not surprise me. That test is comparing your Dual G5 with a Core Duo 2Ghz And the G5 processor is a fast processor but at the same time a very powerhungry processor. The test you did with motion do not surprise me either. That program is very graphic card hungry. The X1600 card in your Mac Book Pro is faster than the X800 card in your PowerMac. Running the same test on a Dual Core 2,0 G5 with a nVidia 7800 would tip the favour back toward that powermac.

I thought about using Qmaster to speed up the encoding of som clips in Compressor, but decided against it when I read that Qmaster divides the clip by the number of Computers on the Qmaster network. That would in my case be my Own Mac mini and a PowerMac G5 Dual 2Ghz borrowed from work. The person who wrote the post told that qmaster send half the clip to his PowerMac G5 and half to the iMac G5 he had. The iMac used more the 3x the time to finish its half meaning that the Power Mac G5 would have finished the hole clip faster than the 2 combined. Qmaster migth provide improved encoding time on machines of similar speed but I agree it is not up to spec in a editing enviroment yet. Improvement for the next final cut studio maby

It s a Bug in Final Cut 5. You need to Export to quicktime instead. when doing so deselect make selfcontained movie. Then export file to a location where you can find it. Open compressor, and import the file. It is now possible to use compressor.

People upgrading their After Effect or Combusiton will also benefit from a fast GPU. Adobe and Descreet has upgraded those programs Open GL part and thus the benifit of a fast GPU.

August 31, 2005 at 6:08 pm in reply to: New to FCP. Any good tutorials ?

Martin Sitter from macprovideo has a very good videotutorial you can buy from his site. I learned quit a few new things from the first 2 videos it is a series of 4 videos. Martin has done the Logic Pro 6 and 7 certification book for apple as well as being co author on DVD studio Pro 3 and 4. I will be buying the latter then they releases it. The Final Cut Quick Pro Guide for Final Cut 5 is a great book to look up things you want to do but do not remember how to do.

you could buy or use a existing firewire harddisk. Carbon Copy Clone your startup disk to the Firewire harddisk. Boot up from the firewire harddisk. Make an Arcive and installe og Tiger, and try it out. If it breaks your setup Return to your startup disk and wait untill the problems has been fixed. You Might want to upgrade the firewiredisk on a regular basic to check if the problems has been fixed. This approach is a heck of a lot cheaper than downtime do to a incompatible OS upgrade;-)
