This is probably a bit late, but I have used most of the options FCP, avid pan and scan, motion and AE and the best bit of software out there for this is Digirostrum from cleverplugs. it costs a bit £300 or so but it offers so much more than in out up down left and right. It is also pretty easy to use and out puts most formats. I often work with massive stills and have problems with fcp and avid crashing and motion scales them to only 4000 pixels wide.

    good luck

Ok so I am being simple here for my own benefit.

    My choices of platform are:
    (CHEAPEST) an HPz400 with Xeon® Quad-Core Processor W3550 (3.06 GHz)
    (MID) an iMac 3.4ghz i7 4 cores
(EXPENSIVE)a Mac Pro with Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core Xeon “Westmere” (8 cores)

    Swings and roundabouts
Macs have thunderbolt PCs have USB3
Aja and Blackmagic I/o boxes fit both

Do I take the cheaper PC option? is there a workflow or speed disadvantage in the PC over the mac.

    All thoughts gratefully received.

    cheers James

Thanks for the thoughts guys, but I am still puzzling over the processor speed differences between the apples and oranges. Is this because the measure the processor speed differently?

It seems that the suggestion is to get the fastest processors you can afford in the greatest numbers.
The price difference between the HP z400 with 6 cores running at 3.3ghz (£1800) and the apple with 6 cores running at 3.3ghz is (£2600) is quite steep.
Which is better for Avid MC5.5 or 6 the HP or the Mac?
Does Media Composer use multiple cores?

    hi jennifer
go to Library/Application Support/ProApps/MIO/RAD/Plugins and put the CanonE1.RADPlug into the trash.

it is a plugin for log and transfer so i guess it lives in a different place.

So I uninstalled the plugin, reinstalled it. edited the cameras plist, and restarted the computer. Oddly this worked and now I can use log and transfer, and benefit from timecode and roll numbers. Happy days…

    Hi
I have been following the threads giving details on how to get footage from the 550D into the log and transfer window, but on my system: Macbook pro, os 10.6.3 Fcp 6.0.2 it does not want to play ball. I have tried editing the plist I even tried using a downloaded plist,
I have tried changing the directory structure but always get this warning:
“DCIM” contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.
if anyone out there has any ideas they will be gratefully recieved.

It could be that I am being put off by the fact that a 42gb quicktime ends up as a 2 gb wmv. (The film is 3 hours long) I am also after a mac solution.

The problem is the screens are 6 foot across so any compression artifacts show.

I have been using flip for mac to export from fcp, but windows media encoder does not like the files it makes.

Assuming the problem is in shots you already have and if the shots are pretty static you could try adding a little motion blur (in the motion tab). Movement within the shot will look pretty odd so you may need to cut out the problem area so you only treat the.
Try the first setting at around 90 and the second to 2.
    good luck

    Thanks for the thoughts.

I tried trashing my preferences, and lo and behold it worked properly. I should have tried this before posting.

    Cheers
