What is the best program for the panning and zooming you see in the Ken Burns documentaries? I have text and pictures to pan and zoom in/out on. I know how to do it in Final Cut Pro. I was wondering if there is another program that does it much better ? Any pointers? What’s the best way to go about doing this?

Also, when I drag the image left or right I always go up or down a little. Is there a way to make sure I’m going straight across without ultra precise mouse dragging (which is close to impossible)?

Thanks so much in advance, I appreciate any kind of response.

I’d use After Effects. You could probably do it in Motion too, but I’ve never used it for that.

You can get a free plug in from Noise Industry.

We bought a plug-in called Moving Picture, which can run stand-alone on another computer while you keep working on an edit with your NLE, or just work within your NLE as a plug-in.

Ok but is there a reason I’d want to use After Effects or Motion over doing it in Final Cut Pro? I haven’t really seen the end result of the ones I’ve experimented with in FCP so I don’t know how they’re going to look, but I’m curious to know if I should be using another program instead and why.

Thanks so much. I will check out the Motion tutorial. I never used Motion before..

FCP doesn’t ease into the movement, or out of the movement smoothly at all. Jerky start and stop. Very bad. I use it when I don’t start a move, or settle on a pic. Otherwise, I use After Effects or Motion…much smoother when settling.

    Folks,

I am a bit biased, but use the free Pan & Zoom plugin from Noise Industries. Keeps it all within FCP and is very easy to use with a setup mode. The guys should really charge for this one as it has some cool features like quadratic in/out acceleration.
