SAN performance is entirely dependent on the speed of the network drives and the quality of the connection- of course mitigated by available bandwidth and number of users.

That might be an OS issue for FCPX. I’d recommend updating to OS 10.8/Mountain Lion which is optimized for FCP X. If you have applications that are not yet ready for that, you could create a Mountain Lion partition and preserve your Snow Leopard install. Here’s how-

Can you be more specific? Is there some aspect of Motion 5 that makes it difficult or impossible to develop your plugins for it?

I’d go two-pass H.264 at 1080p but be prepared for a file that’s still several GB. I’d try to find a place you could upload that with a fast web connection. Or be prepared to send it over several days.

It’s typically almost instant on our 27″ 2013 iMac so I’d guess the bottleneck is probably your system either the CPU or GPU.

I would definitely try to nail it down before they shoot, 4K’s not exactly in a we’ll show up with tapes so make it work state just yet.

Will you be using Sony’s RAW format, XAVC compressed 4K or capturing the live output to a 4K outboard recorder such as a KiPro Quad?

I would definitely recommend having Motion for that. Here’s an example of a free Motion effect you could find that does exactly what you want:

Or you could simply edit the existing Shape Generator in Motion and publish its feather parameter for FCPX- also free once you have Motion.

Why not just edit at the shooting speed and use the Retime tool to conform instead of creating all new media and losing a generation? Also are you sure you reconnected back to the exports and not the original camera clips?
