I’m on 10.6.8, using FCPX for the first time. (Experienced Avid/FCP7 editor.)

I have installed the appropriate Canon plugins and have no problem importing C300 footage into FCP7. But FCPX is not seeing the media. And when I start the latest version of Canon XF Utility, it’s telling me that the “Canon XF MPEG2 Decoder is not installed.” I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail.

Any thoughts? I’m ready to give X a test drive but can’t get off the starting line.

That might be an OS issue for FCPX. I’d recommend updating to OS 10.8/Mountain Lion which is optimized for FCP X. If you have applications that are not yet ready for that, you could create a Mountain Lion partition and preserve your Snow Leopard install. Here’s how-

Yeah. You need the 2.1.1 plug-in for FCPX, which works with 10.7 and 10.8, but which Canon didn’t make available for 10.6.
