AS long as you haven’t changed the resolution or frame rate of the original footage, it’s should remain PAL if that’s how it started.

Sure but you’d have to touch those clips anyway to make your own proxies. Agreed that it would be ideal if you could control the exact size/codec/compression of proxies directly with FCPX’s proxy creation method. But the original poster was looking for a way to get better proxies with the app we have.

This is storing outside of the Original Media folder i.e. not copy on import. And not using the Proxy mode of FCPX- stick with Original Media at all times, simply force relink to the proxies you’ve made with the same file names. And keep in separate folders.

I’d edit it at 1920×1080 and export to 720 when you’re done- this is much easier if you have Compressor. Otherwise edit at 720p.
For the letterbox- use the built-in Letterbox filter, which already has a preset for 2.35.

You can make your own proxies in any codec/resolution that you want and forego the automatic FCPX settings.
All you need to do is make sure the original clips and the proxies you make match identically in their audio channel configuration, starting timecode, frame rate and duration and you can Relink Event Files to originals or any proxy format you choose. This is *not* using FCPX’s own proxy mode but staying in Original Media mode and using the Relink Event Files command to toggle between the original media and your proxies.
The simplest way to do it is to create a folder called Proxies and encode all of your clips to that folder, keeping the same original media name. Then toggling back and forth is very easy because the names match and relink will automatically reconnect all clips in the folder.

It’s not necessary to get a PCI sled just to support an LHE card. Depending on the functionality you’re taking from it you could easily get the same thing from one of the newer AJA Thunderbolt devices such as an Io XT. https://www.aja.com/en/products/io-xt/#overview
Rather then go the Hackintosh route you’d simply sell the LHE, select the appropriate Thunderbolt equivalent, avoid the PCI sled entirely and achieve a much faster workflow with the way faster RAM, CPU and GPU of the new Mac Pro. Or keep it and the older Mac Pro as a backup system/assistant/render workstation.
I suspect your IT guy would agree that supporting an off the shelf Apple configuration is going to be more straightforward than a customized PC rig hacked to run OS X but your mileage may vary.

With the RED plugins you should be able to play those clips in the QuickTime Player as well. Do you hear audio. Is the waveform flat or does it show peaks and valleys? Dropping frames is not unheard of with RED footage.

Edward- does that you mean you don’t like Motion 5/FCPX or that it has architectural changes under the hood that make it difficult/unattractive to update your plugins for it?
