Nice room, Chris. What model of big screen are you using for the client monitor? Is it calibrated or THX certified?

Did you try Sequence>Render All> Both? Sometimes it helps…

If you don’t want to spend the cabbage, try creating s simple set on your own. Create a stippled background in Photoshop using textures, then add lighting effects, matte in some plants, place a photo on the back wall, etc. If you’re using it for a 3 camera shoot, make a master panoramic and crop out a left, middle and right view from the master. It takes time to come up with a good one, but then there’s always the cash option.

Building backgrounds can be fun. You can also use textures in Motion and Livetype as backgrounds for a less realistic, but cool, look.

Welcome to the 21st Century. Like everything else on the computer (desktop publishing, for example), digital video editing has become “democratized” so that everyone can afford to do it. The big difference here is what kind of spot you can create and how much better it would be than if they use the next guy.

I think that one of the best remedies is referrals. When I worked in Los Angeles, we didn’t spend a lot of time creating demos— the producer was more inclined to drop a dime on your other clients and find out what it was like to work with you.

But let’s face it: some people with less experience will hire a cheaper editor. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I think the real competition is ourselves. Branding your post facility and services can make you stand out. You won’t bag all of the jobs, but you might just get the best ones.

A quick suggestion here— try shooting some test footage using your current stock and compare it to test footage shot with the HDV stock. The format is the same, but you’ll probably find that HDV stock is a little more oxide rich and less prone to dropouts. Whenever I’m faced with a new media buying decision, I try both. It won’t hurt your V1Us and it might help your budget.

There are few places to get templates for free. A good way to learn is using tutorials, like those at Motion Smarts https://www.motionsmarts.com/tutorials.html

also, Ken Stone has several articles on his site about how to use Motion:
    https://www.kenstone.net

Peter Wiggins has some templates (free) at
    https://www.peterwiggins.com/

Most templates come with a price, and there are a lot of those on the net. Google them— if you have the wallet to do it.
