Posted by Harry Bromley-davenport on November 29, 2006 at 8:57 pm

I’m a newbie to motion and am looking for some free templates with which to experiment and learn – in addition to those that came with the program.

    Grateful for any suggestions.

    Many thanks,

    Harry

There are few places to get templates for free. A good way to learn is using tutorials, like those at Motion Smarts https://www.motionsmarts.com/tutorials.html

also, Ken Stone has several articles on his site about how to use Motion:
    https://www.kenstone.net

Peter Wiggins has some templates (free) at
    https://www.peterwiggins.com/

Most templates come with a price, and there are a lot of those on the net. Google them— if you have the wallet to do it.

Another good way is to actually “take apart/look under the hood” some of the included Particle and Replicator presets included in Motion (in the Inspector) to figure out how the Motion software team created some of the dazzling effects (some of it is initially counter-intuitive, it took me awhile to see how they were able to create some slick-looking abstract patterns with just simple elements).

One of the things I’ve done is to go through the tutorials (listed above) and save the finished tutorial as a custom template. This way I don’t have to keep going back to the source to find what I need, I can use one of my templates and either just change the files that are in it, or use it as a guide for creating something new. Bottom line though, do the tutorials. They are some of the most useful tools out there. The guys/gals who spent the time to create them should be given awards, especially since many of them don’t even charge for them!
