I just upgraded my XL2 to two V1Us. Here is my question…I know it is recommended that you use the new Sony Digital Master tapes when shooting HDV, but I have a TON of the Panasonic MQ miniDV tapes. Is it okay to use those when shooting HDV? Will it really matter in the end?

Congratulations on your aquisition of 2 V1U’s (they are fantastic cameras)

The only real reason I can think of to use the sony hdv tapes exclusively is drop outs.

How important is it to you that all of your footage is good and glitch free?

After going through trials of different media, I found that the Sony HDV tapes are by far the most reliable.

More reliable than the JVCPRO-HD media that was allegedly designed for my HD100 camcorder. I had dropouts on every tape I shot with, not many but they were there.

I switched over to the Sony HDV tapes after hearing stories from many others about how great it is and how they had not had dropouts, and now I have no dropouts on my shoots.

Some people will say they use panasonic stock and have no drop outs at all. I guess then it depends on your karma/luck.

Thanks! I pretty much only use the FCP forum, so I just go here by nature. I’ll check the HDV forum.

A quick suggestion here— try shooting some test footage using your current stock and compare it to test footage shot with the HDV stock. The format is the same, but you’ll probably find that HDV stock is a little more oxide rich and less prone to dropouts. Whenever I’m faced with a new media buying decision, I try both. It won’t hurt your V1Us and it might help your budget.

I bought the DR60 hard drive which has been great but I have used Sony DVCam tapes that are more than a year old and they have been great. Haven’t had problems with them.

[gnomebard] ” I have used Sony DVCam tapes”

DVCam tapes will not work in a HDV camera

One of the most important thing about choosing a type of tape, is picking a bran d and sticking to it. Different brands of tape use different lubricants. Some are oil based, some are dry based. Mixing then can cause the tape heads in your camera to gum up, thus causing bigger problems. Even mixing different oil based tapes or different dry based tapes can potentially cause problems.

So pick a tape and stick to it.

Sorry, but that just isn’t true. Small format DVCam tape works just fine. I have literally HUNDREDS of DVCam tapes with HDV footage recorded onto them. Not yet experienced any drop-out either.
