  • Finally nailed down the problem. It was in a file called: “Final Cut Pro Thumbnail Data” that appeared to be corrupted. This evidently caused the startup process to get lost (in my case looking for something that didn’t exist on an external firewire drive), and hang for a few minutes before opening.

This took a couple of days to find, hopefully others will find this information helpful.

  • Yes, Mac OS Extended, and I use a broadcast monitor for editing.

The noise gate seems to knock out the low volume ambient music nicely from the subject track, at least in between the speaking parts. Music still exist underneath the spoken parts, but the speaking part seems to cover it okay. I was worried more about copyright problems regarding music that may be distinguished even though it is playing off in the distance.

It seemed to happen with the last update of Quicktime, and I knew I found the cause when I uninstalled the mpeg2 component (note that if haven’t purchased mpeg2 from Apple you need to look elsewhere for an explanation) and FCP loaded much quicker. However, quicker wasn’t better, as the consequence was that FCP could no longer handle mpeg2 segments in the timeline. So I reinstalled mpeg2 and now wait patiently while FCP takes longer to load. If you find a real solution please let us know.

I’m using Mac Tiger OS, and they are in the Energy Saver Preference Panel. On the top there is a field called “Settings for:” select Power Adaptor and then go to UPS and be sure the hard drive check box is unchecked so the system does not put the drive to sleep in “Adaptor” mode or “UPS” mode. I also chose not to put the computer to sleep until 3 hours.

In Cocktail just follow the prompts for energy saving options.

I am using two 500 Lacie’s and it has been reliable for years; although, your problem sounds familiar. One of my drives was spinning down about every 20 minutes. Since this interrupted the print to tape process I had to find an answer. Lacie tech support said there was no intelligence in the drive circuitry to trigger a spin down. What I did was turn off all spin down options in Adaptor and Battery Supply modes in the OS. I also used the utility called Cocktail to turn off spin down, and I haven’t had a problem since.

  • Make sure everything is okay with Quicktime, especially with the components. I had a similar problem with compressor. In my case I had an mpeg2 clip in the timeline and the Quicktime mpeg2 component was missing which caused the failure at that point.

I’d be a very rich man indeed if I were compensated for bad programming. Soon, software developers will have to face the same consequences as other manufacturers for defective products. Write your representative.

We should all learn to pause before updating/upgrading during critical times. Wait until your project is done and you have the time to play/test before making changes to your work-flow.
