Removing ambient sound
Posted by Jack Fox on April 3, 2006 at 9:52 pmIs there an amplitude audio filter that will eliminate sounds below a certain level threshold? I have music playing off in the background that is picked up on the lavaliere that I would like to eliminate.

April 3, 2006 at 10:00 pmUse the Expander/Noise Gate.
But I have to warn you, you may not like the results.

April 3, 2006 at 10:52 pmIf some of the noise is in the clear, sample it in SountrackPro and try to remove it. Myself though, I’d try removing it with Bias Sounsoap.
Have a wonderful day.

April 3, 2006 at 11:18 pmThe problem is that “music” is non-continuous noise (like hum or hiss).
That’s the kind of noise SoundSoap is designed to handle.

You’ve been watching too many “crime scene” movies where the FBI guy just “dials away” the extraneous noise leaving pristine, clear, audible dialogue of the Senator accepting a bribe. Truth is, in real life it ain’t that easy. (the audio… not the bribe!)
Sure, there are many tools you can use to “clean up” your audio tracks, but they all extract a price. Your original dialogue may be altered to the point that leaving in the background is a better option. Sound track Pro has a very capable “noise print” identifier/remover. But go easy on it. Filtering out this kind of noise really trashes the remaining audio. Good luck.

April 4, 2006 at 1:36 pmThe noise gate seems to knock out the low volume ambient music nicely from the subject track, at least in between the speaking parts. Music still exist underneath the spoken parts, but the speaking part seems to cover it okay. I was worried more about copyright problems regarding music that may be distinguished even though it is playing off in the distance.
