You can run Color and Resolve on the same machine. I’ve seen it first hand. The only inconvenience is Color uses whatever card you’re using for the monitors so you’ll need to switch cables to the GTX or Quadro when you want the best performance. The GT 120 is painfully slow, but the GTX 285’s performance isn’t that much slower than an approved ATI.

You should trade in your quad for a supported 2009 or 2010 Mac though.

I think that both those cards together might cause heat issues. The GT120 runs fairly cool compared to the 8800. $140 for a fully vetted GPU is a no-brainer of me.

People should keep in mind that in these early stages of Mac Resolve, a reputation for being stable is important and running supported gear’s going to help that.

Audio professionals have been using PCI/PCIe chassis for years because of the lack of slots. I don’t know if the trend started with using multiple DSPs in ProTools, but that’s when I first encountered it almost 6 years ago when I was building ProTools HD systems.

Many cards don’t make full use of a slot’s bandwidth anyway and that’s why you can run 2GPU cards on a 16x bus.

I started researching PCIe chassis last April after NAB and a Mac compatible one suited for your needs should cost between $1000-$2000. A new Mac costs over $4000 right?
