What codec are you compressing with?
The MOV or AVI is just a container file. Please check your render settings. Sounds like you’re creating lossless movie files for the client. They will be large. If it’s for approvals or quick one-offs, use Photo-JPEG or Sorenson at Medium quality. -
Open the comp that was created when you imported the PhoSho file and press Cmd/Ctrl K. At the bottom is the length of the comp. Press 6, Enter.

My mentor taught me that anything you can shoot in 15 seconds will take you hours to perfect with plugins. Plugins are awesome but Mother Nature pwns.

As and alpha = as a Track Matte
Put your JPEG comp above of your footage layer.
Select your footage layer.
Press F4 and click the drop-down that says “No Track Matte”.
Set the Track Matte to your JPEG comp.Not sure what your ‘transition’ is, but if it’s JPEG it has no alpha, so choose one of the Luma Track Mattes. The JPG comp will become hidden. If you need to see it, duplicate it and turn it visible.

Shoot in a dark room with a light source close to the tank (above or below) and another illuminating your white background. A flat-lit background is pretty important. The camera’s reflection is far less an issue this way. Nate’s right, a luma matte should do the trick.The first time I dropped dye I expected to see a burst of color. What happened was a little less spectacular. The dye hits the surface and is very light weight so it just sits there, slowly sinking into the water, maybe moving with whatever current remains from filling the tank. The shapes it makes are cool and with multiple colors overlaying and mixing it’s brilliant, but not what I was looking for. I’m sure in super fast-mo it would look a little neater.
What I ended up doing was mixing dye with watered-down latex paint and dropping a half cup at once. Of course I shot with a black BG due to the lightness of the paint. This is a totally different effect though. A lot like inverted smoke.

A for effort. I agree. Just looks like everyone’s first experience with PhoSho’s Posterize and Find Edges. The black lines lack enough consistency to make them artistic – each one closely resembling an accident. That Waking Life Linklater effect takes a great deal of effort, tracing everything in the frame every couple of frames. If there was a pile of effects that could approximate that look it would be much desired.
Again, A for effort. I hope this doesn’t come off rude.
