Press Cmd-shift / to add the comp to the render queue. In your output settings you will default to Animation compression BUT with only RGB channels. You need to drop the Channels dropdown and select RGB+Alpha (the tranparency). Two dropdowns below that one, select “Straight” rather than Pre-Multiplied.

Depending on your FCP version you will need to tell the program how to interpret your alpha. Select your imported clip in FCP. At the bottom of the Modify menu select Alpha> Straight.

If you view the render in Quicktime it will look ridiculous because QT won’t render the alpha correctly.

Send them out full quality (48khz, 16 bit) AIFF or WAV.

I disagree. While there is no integration, (the two haven’t ever even met) you can make due with AE renders converted to FLVs (alpha support!) and image sequences.

    Example:

Create a 10 frame movie of a static button, hover state and action state and export it as a PNG sequence. Import those frames into a movie symbol [with stop()s between states]. Put that Movie into your Button symbol and set the start frames as needed.

Because you used PNG, you have a full alpha channel. But you’ll also have a large file size. Don’t render more area than you’ll need for your symbol or button.

Hmm. I’d have to see the footage first… yes…

There are some “steam-like” setting in Trapcode’s Particular.

Maybe just animating a lot of masks and using a lot of Gaussian Blur set to add.

Select the gobo layer and press AA. Set the Shadow to “Shadow Only.”

  • Have you tried animating the “Index”?

At any time that you feel uncomfortable with the bezier curve that AE hands you, you can select the pen tool (the Adobe non-standard ‘G’ key) and hold Opt/Alt and adjust the curve manually.
