Just an FYI, the optical disc forum is the ‘Sony PDW and F900’ (or something like that) forum.

What version of Transfer are you using? Is it 2.12? Can you try taking the MXFs from /CLIP and copying them to a new disc? You do not need to copy the proxies or the metadata. If you are able to copy the files, does Transfer accept the disc?

Transfer speeds will be roughly the same, as both are USB 2.0 devices. For a faster transfer you’d need to use a built in express card slot with the SxS driver installed.

Edius supports direct import and you can also use Clip Browser as a plug-in. Tools–>XDCAM EX CLIP BROWSER–>drag thumbnails into Edius. File(s) will remain in their original location until you transfer to project media (Right Click–>Transfer…).

EX records MPEG-2 with an .mp4 wrapper. Optical XDCAM discs record .mxf files. You can use CB to convert .mp4 to .mxf
if you need .mxf files..

yes, that’s correct. you may also want to consider the XDCAM Transfer plugin over the Log and Transfer plugin, as XT handles imports as a background task. this allows you to keep working in both FCP and the transfer window as the files are coming in.

Log and Transfer v 1.2 will recognize the SD AVI files and convert them to .mov.

You can also import natively but you’ll get a ‘media not optimized’ warning and will have trouble media-managing the AVIs down the road (for example FCP won’t trim non-.MOV files to the lengths used in the timeline if you try to media manage the project). You also may not have the same level of real time capability with the AVIs.

Are the other settings (Cache etc) in the ‘Rec Function’ menu ghosted out as well? Check the setting of Assign Switch 2– if Cache Record is assigned to this slide switch you lose the ability to select any of the Rec Function items from the camera menu.

this clears the cache (thumbnails and, for optical XDCAM, proxies) but doesn’t remove the source from the list

You can continue using Transfer for other cards. You should also try deleting the source and clearing the cache– this may fix the issue with syncing this particular card.

Use the ‘Register for FCP’ command to import. There’s a button with a right facing arrow under the preview window, or you can select it from the File menu or the right-click menu.

You need to run Browser in plug-in mode (i.e. launched from/sync’d to FCP). No standalone operation yet as we have with Transfer.

What do Clip Browser or XDCAM Browser show for the same card image? Are the .mp4s import-able using either of these?

Also– if you delete the source and clear the cache and re-add the source does the application still report these ghost clips? What about if you move the BPAV to the local drive?

Nothing in the card image was manipulated or moved/renamed? How were the files copied to the drive?

Hi Joe,

It sounds like you have a USB/Proxy disc image. These are created in the following scenarios:

1) The camera is set up for simultaneous USB recording to an attached thumb drive

2) Clips are copied from the camera to an attached USB thumb drive

3) A backup disc image is exported from the PDZ-1 software. (People sometimes think that this function creates a full ‘clone’ of the disc– it does not.)

The point of a disc image with everything but the hi-res files is portability (1 hour of proxy video = approx 1 GB). This enables you to import the disc into the PDZ-1 software and log/edit the metadata and then write that metadata back to the master disc at a later time. You can also import the proxy disc image into (for example) Avid Media Composer or Sony Vegas Pro and then conform the proxy clips to full resolution when you have access to the master disc.

I’m guessing that neither of these correspond to your workflow and that what you need is a copy of the master disc with the full-res video files. Hopefully this isn’t a problem for you to get. But the image you have isn’t broken or the product of a malfunction; it’s just not the image you need.

Have them copy the entire disc using Windows or Mac OS or a file copy utility. This will create a copy with the full res clips.

The ‘component’ folder is optional and only appears when the disc is formatted on certain machines. Its purpose is to store audio-only MXF files created when using the live voice over function on the portable decks. What you should see from a 700 is Clip, Sub, edit, General and User Data. You may see a “Pro AV folder,” which can be optionally hidden as it contains all the raw, non-interleaved MXF data. You do not need to copy this folder unless you are using Avid and want to edit proxy video with high-res audio. You’ll notice that if you copy a disc with 30 GB of clips and include the ProAV folder you end up with 60 GB of copied data–this is because you end up copying both the self-contained MXF files and the raw audio and video files (i.e. copying all the contents twice). Again, you do not need to copy this folder unless you are working in Avid and want to import the low-res video with high-res audio.

This should not be a problem. What version FAM driver are you running? Are you able to copy other types of files to USER DATA or GENERAL (a PDF or doc, for example)? If you copy one file at a time vs multiple files do you see any difference in behavior?
