Untill ProRes gets replaced as a deliverable requirement, a large segment of editors will stick with OSX under duress. It makes no sense that this is still the case, but then many things in life are just accidents of history.

It is no easy task to reduce the 100 year history of motion picture editing to a blog post, and you got the basics correct even when your facts are questionable ( “It was the first film that introduced the art of editing to the world.” The Great Train Robbery is the first notable American film to introduce the idea of cross cutting, I don’t know that “the art of editing” started there.), however I think your missing how large the transition was between film editing and video linear editing (the two overlapped from aprox. 1975 to 1995.) It is also not quite right to describe film editing as linear – it is linear meaning slow, in that you cannot jump from one point to another instantaneously, but it is non-linear in that you can edit any where in the film without having to reconstruct everything that comes after. If you never had to deal with a linear on-line edit process than you don’t realize quite how backward that process was from film editing and how far forward we have come.

Also, historically, Avid was the 2nd NLE; the EMC2 was the first modern digital NLE and came out a few months before. And as for this line – ” I still rate the Avid as the best NLE for its stability, accuracy and purity” I have no idea what purity means in that sentence.

You can do great work within Ppro using Colorista IV, a plug-in for Ppro by the same Red Giant that makes Magic Bullet. I know there is a Colorista module within Magic Bullet but I don’t know if it’s as full featured or what the workflow is; but I do know that the MB presets will not get you what you’re looking for. Many people are quite happy with the Lumetri Color Panel within Ppro, but I don’t use it much and can’t speak to how well it would solve your problems. Using Colorista’s HSL color wheels you can specify a color, then move those frequencies higher or lower, darker or lighter, more saturation or less, without affecting other colors. It is just what you want to make your grass greener without tinting the rest of the color spectrum. There is a similar tool in the Lumetri Panel, but I don’t use it enough to comment on it.

Bill, first of all let me thank you for posting Booker T. — nothing like a little Green Onions for breakfast before I start my day. And I learned something — he was till in high school when he wrote it, and must have been under 20 when he was touring and backing all those great bands. Fantastic.

As to the rest … the Touch Bar is nice, I’m sure it will be useful to some people, but it’s hardly earth shattering. If you really like “touch” interfaces you should try Microsoft – not only a touch “bar” but you can touch the entire screen. But I forgot, you are restricted in your choices because … well, because you are.

I happen to have short stubby fingers, one of them damaged in an old accident, and have no interest in “touch” technology of any kind, but I realize that a generation brought up on “touch” texting will adapt differently.

On the other hand (see what i did there), editing is not organ playing — it does not go faster if you use two hands independently. Two brains would be a help, but that’s called having an AE, and your not allowed to touch them.

I have both a souped-up 2010 MacPro and a 2013 TrashCan. The problem with the 2010 is lack of either USB-3 or Thunderbolt connectivity, making ingest from external drives slow and difficult. If everything is coming in on a network then the 2010 is fine – Buy the best 2010 Cheese Grater you can find (probably cost under 2K), add an SSD boot drive ($400), a high end Nvidia GPU ($600) and max out your ram ($600 – 800) and for less than 4K you’re in business.
