So in the case of Jason’s 40 disk order he would owe 80 cents. I’m sure MPEG LA will be running after him to collect. If you are selling enough DVD’s for the license fee to matter, then you are dealing with a duplicator who is already paying the license fee. This is really a non issue.

Thanks for the info. Mostly I just want to use my PC versions of AE & Photoshop without having to upgrade to a Mac version, and without sabotaging my Final Cut workflow. There are, however, many little utilities I can get in the PC world that I can’t get for the Mac and it’s nice to have the access.

First, and foremost, please, do not call panning and zooming on an image “the Ken Burns effect.” He didn’t invent it, he didn’t perfect it, it was being done before he was born.

Second – I have done the exact thing your talking about many times and yes it works.

As others have stated, use a standard DV sequence setting. For a 320 X 240 final image feel free to scale your shots up to about 150% with no apparent image degradation – beyond that it’s up to how much softness you can tolerate. Export using Quick Time conversion to 320 by 240. Voila – done.

The first thing to try would be sending a reference signal to the deck. This should go from your SDI card to the Reference In on the back of the 1200A. If this doesn’t help I’d suggest cleaning the heads. I have had all sorts of problems laying back to the 1200A via firewire but I’ve never had an issue with laying back via HD SDI that wasn’t cured by cleaning the heads on the deck. The fact that you can play back field tapes does not mean that the heads aren’t dirty enough to screw up a recording.

I have had all sorts of problems capturing back to the 1200A over firewire. That’s why I make it a practice to do it over HD SDI – your concept is fine, just make sure you set your deck control to firewire while your output setting is HD SDI.

While sending a reference signal is always good practice, the Panasonic 1200A does not need it, and will do assemble edits from FCP just fine without it.

Can you slip and move frames by a subframe amount? – I thought subframe was limited to keyframing.

What HD deck are you using. If it’s the 1200A, Panasonic crippled it by disabling the assemble mode using the 422 protocol. In order to get it to work with edit-to-tape you have to use the firewire for deck control even though you are using SDI for input.

Your making things much too complicated.

Add Twixtor to the clip you want to adjust.

Double click the clip, open up the filters tab.

Scroll down to the “Output Control” section.

“Time Map Mode” = “Speed”

“Speed %” – enter the speed you want the clip to play, i.e. 50%

“Frame Interp” = “Motion Weighted Blend”

“Smart Blend” – check this box.

“Motion Blur” – up to you, I generally put in 1.

Now render and be prepared for a long wait, Twixtor is very slow — but worth it.

Also, I would recommend that once you like the results, you export a self contained Movie of the clip and use that, because any transitions or changes to the twixtor clip will require a re-render, which takes a lot of time.
