I have my clip on timeline- I wish to slow its speed to 50% ie 10 secs becomes 20. I pad the clip with a copy of itself (as suggested in the tutorial) so it should be perfectly twice as long as a “pre-comp.” Then I put this sequence (the intermediate sequence right?) inside a blank sequence and get a screen that looks like tutorial. If I render this: Nothing, black w/”X” If I select the first clip in the padded sequence, move it to the blank one…same result. This can’t be this hard! Jeez, there simply is not a step by step instuction out there? You can’t guess this stuff. So how do I do it? Forget all that vector talk its gotta work first.

You’re just trying to slow your clip to 50% speed, right? I don’t know what all the talk about pre-comps, clip padding and vectors was. I’m completely baffled. If you want to slow down a shot, load it into the viewer, press cmd+j to change it’s speed, and edit it into the timeline.

Oh, I see one word in your post I didn’t read. Twixtor. I don’t know what that is.

[dougorama] “I pad the clip with a copy of itself (as suggested in the tutorial) so it should be perfectly twice as long as a “pre-comp”
    This I don’t understd it.
What you must do is to put in a sequence a piece of SLUG of the final duration you want for the clip. So if you want to slow down your clip to 50%, you must put a Slug with double duration of the clip.
    – Apply the filter.
    – Drag and drop the clip from the Brownser to the Twixtor well.
    – Adjust the parameter.
    Should work like that.
You can apply Twixtor directly to the clip if you go to speed it up, because the duration of the final clip will be shorter than the original.
But if you want to slow-down your clip, you must apply it to the Slug.

I’ll try that last advice. I post here cause this is where the Twixtor folks sent me.

I think I know what you mean by the “well” but Twixtor’s latest tutorial says not to use a slug..ug! No simple instructions seem to exist.

The “well” is an small window in the effect tab,
You right. It seems that they have changed the instructions in the last few weeks.
Now they do not recommend to use the SLUG or Noise system.
    What they suggest is:
    – Put few copies of your clip in a sequence.
    – Drag this sequence from the brownser to a new sequence (perhaps works nesting the sequence).
    – Apply the filter to the new sequence.
    – Drag the clip FROM THE BROWNSER to the Twixtor well.
I’ve being always using the SLUG method, and works fine.
I have to try this new way.

I appreciate replies. I had settings as per tutorial, and either there was no render or it played “black.” I had already set RT as safe, put one clip after the other to double the time (halve the speed). So, don’t select this sequence or try to drop it into another as selected or apply the filter yet. Create a new blank sequence, drop the 1st doubled sequence into it, select the timeline, apply Twixtor to it, redline appears over entire clip, render it, it works. No dropping anything into a well needed. Perhaps it works now because I used Software Update to download updates to “professional software” in my Mac (though FCP still says 6.0 not 6.1)
Now I can concentrate on “nearest” vs “blend” (my jumping skateboarder looks pretty good until he crosses over a fence in the background, which wiggles and melts between his legs)

    Dougorama –

Your making things much too complicated.

Add Twixtor to the clip you want to adjust.

Double click the clip, open up the filters tab.

Scroll down to the “Output Control” section.

    “Time Map Mode” = “Speed”

“Speed %” – enter the speed you want the clip to play, i.e. 50%

“Frame Interp” = “Motion Weighted Blend”

“Smart Blend” – check this box.

“Motion Blur” – up to you, I generally put in 1.

Now render and be prepared for a long wait, Twixtor is very slow — but worth it.

Also, I would recommend that once you like the results, you export a self contained Movie of the clip and use that, because any transitions or changes to the twixtor clip will require a re-render, which takes a lot of time.
