I tested for a full 3 day weekend and REALLY wanted to love the JVC 700 (never used the 790) and I was never happy…. issues with noise, build quality and so on… I LOVE the shape / ergonomics and the cost.. but the HPX plain & simple just makes a better picture IMHO and thats what we buy cameras for…

    Thanks,
    Harry

October 13, 2010 at 3:18 am in reply to: New info on AVC intra native vs Prores?

Thanks – everyone. I also just got an email from a friend at a big post house in Hollywood – he suggested I import as Prores
for the savings in render time as well (at the cost of longer log & transfer – but thats 1 night per shoot of thinking – not endless rendering
as I go). He also agreed about the prores vs prores HQ.

    THANKS again.

    Thanks,
    Harry

  • Yes at least for me researching the right workflow for my boss. And quite frankly the difference in image quality is fairly minute – especially when you consider how crushed it gets when it gets put in the server (compress) then sent out a pipe to the cable / sat company and then crushed again to your home (probably with lots of splitters) where it is viewed on a TV set that is totally miss calibrated.

We get plenty of comments about how good our HD show looks – not just from general population – but from engineers, other producers and occasionally a few shooters… when in fact its DigiBeta upped to HD.

Tell a compelling story and people will never know the difference…. or if people are seeing grain / noise in the shadows then the story must be pretty boring.

The 1-clip record is not a make or break… but one of many issues.

    Thanks,
    Harry

The long story of what we are trying to do is here: https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/99/859239

The short is that my boss makes a paper edit with timecode, then in the edit bay he tells the editor to go to 01:05:27 for example – and instead of having the editor have to open clip 1 and scrub only to find it stops at minute 3, then open the next clip and see it stops just before the moment we need, then finally open the right clip.

I know we can just dump them all on the timeline and export a new master clip – but wanted to save time & steps… and I figured that should be one of the benefits of modern computer / cameras.

Do you know where Emre got the quote about the Panny 370? Seems like that camera has a lot to like!

    Thanks,
    Harry

  • No – not a fat32 isue…

this is from the JVC site about 1/2 way down:
    https://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/tech_desc.jsp?model_id=MDL101851&feature_id=02

    Continuous Clip Mode
In this mode, the GY-HM700 creates a single clip file from multiple trigger presses. This is ideal when “in camera editing” is preferred. The complete shot sequence is instantly available as a single clip. When recording in the Continuous Clip Mode, time code can be either free run or in the REC mode.

I also understand the new Panny 370 can do this.

And Bill – yes we can do that – but I was hoping to avoid any extra steps if we go with a SxS camera.

    Thanks,
    Harry

April 10, 2010 at 5:08 am in reply to: Anyone Mastering to XDCAM HD discs?

Yes I’d prefer the 700 to the 335 – but the 15K +lens (or use our own for now) might be too rich four our blood. We would also be getting a new mac and Kona (3 or Leh?) card, and a deck that shows time code.

I imagine it will be exciting to go tapeless. Thanks – and if you care I posted more on the the other thread.

    Thanks,
    Harry
