  • Can one have all clips show up on disc as 1 shot?

Subject says it all… can you set the Xdcams to have all the recorded clips show up as 1 take on the disc?
You can do this on the JVC-700 that shoots to SDHC cards using the sony 35 codec.

What about SxS – can that be forced to show up as 1 continuous clip?

    Thanks,
    Harry

    Nope, because they aren’t.

A “shot” (take) is from camera on to camera off.

Bummer – strange – because you can do it on the JVC… would seem like it would be easy.

    How is it done?

    EDIT:

I think you may be referring to the issue of FAT32 on the SDHC cards, which automatically divides long takes into 12-13 minute clips. That is an *entirely* different thing.

It is NOT stitching together many shorter shots/takes. As I pointed out, it’s just the opposite.

It’s hard to know exactly what you’re after. If the issue is wanting to see all the clips as one unit, if you are using FCP, it’s easy enough to drop a whole card onto a sequence. You can then view the sequence in fcp or export it as a self contained QT .mov file and you’ve got one ‘clip’ containing the entire card.

    No – not a fat32 isue…

this is from the JVC site about 1/2 way down:
    https://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/tech_desc.jsp?model_id=MDL101851&feature_id=02

    Continuous Clip Mode
In this mode, the GY-HM700 creates a single clip file from multiple trigger presses. This is ideal when “in camera editing” is preferred. The complete shot sequence is instantly available as a single clip. When recording in the Continuous Clip Mode, time code can be either free run or in the REC mode.

I also understand the new Panny 370 can do this.

And Bill – yes we can do that – but I was hoping to avoid any extra steps if we go with a SxS camera.

    Thanks,
    Harry

No, the EX cameras do not have a Continuous Clip Mode.

Is that more important to you than a superior image?

Yes at least for me researching the right workflow for my boss. And quite frankly the difference in image quality is fairly minute – especially when you consider how crushed it gets when it gets put in the server (compress) then sent out a pipe to the cable / sat company and then crushed again to your home (probably with lots of splitters) where it is viewed on a TV set that is totally miss calibrated.

We get plenty of comments about how good our HD show looks – not just from general population – but from engineers, other producers and occasionally a few shooters… when in fact its DigiBeta upped to HD.

Tell a compelling story and people will never know the difference…. or if people are seeing grain / noise in the shadows then the story must be pretty boring.

The 1-clip record is not a make or break… but one of many issues.

    Thanks,
    Harry
