“Once upon a time…” Canopus used reference files with their Storm and Raptor cards. Caused serious problems and was based on type 1 AVI’s, which are not favoured by PremPro. Since PremPro uses type 2 AVI’s there is no need for reference files anymore. They are a thing from the past. Not meaning that anything from the past is worthwhile. Why else would we have musea? But in reality, that is where ref.files belong. In a museum.

As I told you before on another forum, the sweet spot in price/performance is with the 320/400 GB @ 7200 RPM SATA’s. No benefit from a Raptor for scratch disks. For OS, yes.

    160 GB @ 10K do not exist.

For graphics I would look at something like an nVidia 7800 GS for around $ 260.

Why use 3×120 in a raid for system? 1 disk is more than sufficient, use the other 2 for a second Raid for scratch disks/previews.

What mobo do you use. PCI-e, AGP, PCIx?

If you want to transfer data, use the following workflow:

    1. Capture to HD
    2. Copy or move, using Explorer, to a USB1 connected external drive
    3. Go to sleep
    4. After breakfast, take your external drive to the other PC
    5. Copy or move the files on your external drive to the internal one on this PC
    6. Take a long coffee break, followed by an extended but copious lunch break
    7. Return to work

    That may work.

Tests on a 250 GB/7200 RPM external disk show:

USB2: average transfer rate slightly below 20 MB/s with a CPU load of 12.6%
Firewire: average transfer rate of 26 MB/s with a CPU load of 1.4%

If you have the choice, firewire is better because of the much lower CPU load. If you don’t have the choice, USB2 will do, but USB1 will not.

Why don’t you get a second HD. USB will be way to slow at 1.0 and even at 2.0 it will seriously drag down your system.
