    Hey all
I’ve got a bit of a dilemna here.
I’m working with Premiere Pro 2.0, on a PC, with a mini-DV camcorder, with a firewire connection. Thw storage capacity on the PC is very limited, s i’ve got an external USB2.0 hard drive. the problem is that the USB2.0 controller on the PC is broken, and the only way to get back to USB2.0 speed, would be to buy a USB2.0 card. now here’s my Q, would I be able to capture directly from the camcorder , and onto the external hard drive, which would only be running at USB1.0 speeeds? OR, should I capture it to the PC’s HDD, and then transfer it manually to the external HDD? Yes, this will take a VERY long time either way (70+ gigs), but all I want to know is if capturing directly through USB1.0 will cause dropped frames etc…

    Thanks in advance
    Chris

Why don’t you get a second HD. USB will be way to slow at 1.0 and even at 2.0 it will seriously drag down your system.

I would have to agree with Harm on this one.. I’ve always had the best results capturing to an internal drive.

USB 1.0 is far to slow to be useful for much of anything other than keyboards and mice. I would not want to use a hard drive on that connection ever. Trying to capture video to it would be highly discouraging.

    Chris,

USB2 is more than fast enough for what you

Tests on a 250 GB/7200 RPM external disk show:

USB2: average transfer rate slightly below 20 MB/s with a CPU load of 12.6%
Firewire: average transfer rate of 26 MB/s with a CPU load of 1.4%

If you have the choice, firewire is better because of the much lower CPU load. If you don’t have the choice, USB2 will do, but USB1 will not.

    Hey Harm
Yes, I’m aware that USB1.0 is GENERALLY not at all a useable option, but I’m working on a PC with no USB2.0 controller, and at the moment I have no possible way of getting hold of USB2.0 card. That’s why I’m asking if I should capture directly to the external HDD, or if I should capture to an internal HDD, and then transfer to the external one, and also, what would the chances be of losing data, through transferring so much data to one HDD, and then (through USB1.0) to another? (Yes, yes, I know, digital, not analogue, no generation loss, but things go wrong)

    OK, thanks again

If you want to transfer data, use the following workflow:

    1. Capture to HD
    2. Copy or move, using Explorer, to a USB1 connected external drive
    3. Go to sleep
    4. After breakfast, take your external drive to the other PC
    5. Copy or move the files on your external drive to the internal one on this PC
    6. Take a long coffee break, followed by an extended but copious lunch break
    7. Return to work

    That may work.

    OK Thanks
Put it really litirally for me!
I suppose that’s what I’ll have to do.

    Cheers
