Thanks for your help and suggestions. However, in HDV mode there is no scene detection, that only applies to DV. This tape was shot by a first time user of the Z1 and he must have been experimenting with the camera and probably was not aware of the end-search capability.
In a DV world your suggestion makes perfect sense, but in a HDV environment with MPEG2 encoding, frame accurate capture is not possible with PP. Even when using time interval batch capture mode, capturing let’s say 10 minute segments of the tape, consecutive parts have different end/begin points, often overlapping or missing several frames.
Unfortunately the Help file was no help and the timecode filter only allows an offset of 50 frames and can not be applied to the source monitor.
Any other approaches?

Use something like 2-pass VBR with 2-6-8 Mbps settings, 6 being average or use a bitrate calculator to get optimal settings.

What you could do if you really must use PAL, that is if the NTSC version does not work, is to only export the video to AVI, use something like Procoder or Procoder Express to convert the NTSC AVI to PAL AVI and replace the original clip with the converted clip. Save this project, open a new PAL project and import the saved one. The problem is however with titles. Going from 480 to 576 vertical resolution is tricky. Try how that works.

Likely your NTSC DVD will play fine on a PAL player in the UK, since most accept NTSC in addition to PAL.

You ever heard the statement: “Garbage in, garbage out” ? This is a typical example of GIGO. If you input a small frame size in a format not meant for editing, how can you expect to get good results? Accept the fact that this material was NOT meant for editing, at least not with this kind of application. Either get a good DV or HDV camera or a different application.

I know the agony of capture cards. I have used the DVRaptor, DVStorm and Matrox RT.X100.
Luckily I have sold them all and only work with OHCI with PremPro without problems.
