You could try with material suited for editing, MSDV AVI instead of MPEG and MP3, which are suited for display, not for editing. Second, you could try to adjust the resolution of your stills to match your project settings.

If your deck/camera supports HDV recording at 1080P, no problem to de-interlace. If you can only record 1080i, why de-interlace? Just because the DP says so? Try short pieces of your timeline, once in P and once in i and let him decide what is better.

File transfer. This is a digital 1 to 1 copy. No quality loss. From a workflow point of view it may not be ideal.

This is a common occurrence with non MSDV codecs, like DivX and the like. What is the codec used?

My experience with native HDV editing (non Aspect HD) is that on the monitor the interlacing looks quite bad and de-interlacing improves the image enormously on the monitor. However after exporting to DVD the de-interlaced version contains far more artifacts when played on a normal TV than an interlaced version. Not so on a computer however, so the question is how do you want to deliver. DVD for TV, interlace, if you want DVD for computer play, doesn’t really matter.

Sorry, should have mentioned, but assumed it was common knowledge, don’t use external USB or fire wire drives if it can be avoided. Use internal SATA’s or eSATA’s. If you have no space (in a laptop) preferably use eSATA or in the worst case fire wire. USB drives are too slow and drain too much CPU power from your system to work reliably.
Just for a frame of reference, sustained read/write speed and CPU load typically are:
USB: 20-25 MB/s @ 12% CPU load
Firewire: 25-30 MB/s @ 3% CPU load
SATA2: 50-70 MB/s @ 2% CPU loadWhat about your system specs?

First of all, get a 2-nd and preferably a 3-rd hard disk drive for media and scratch files.
