Being sort of in the same boat, there’s two issues I need covered:
1. Monitoring video (deckling multibridge studio like: pixel accutrate HD via dvi)
2. Monitoring audio for 5.1 mixing. That is at least 6 channels (prefereably more) of analogue audio i/o.
3. A PCI-X to PCIe upgrade upgrade path.Does the Kona 2 fit this bill?

What I’d do is to use some kind of IP-telephony (skype comes to mind) and record the conversation directly from your computer. (Snapz-pro, if you’re on a Mac.
To get the “telephone” quality of sound (if you don’t want to fake it with eq and compression/limiting), you could use an USB phone and something like skype-mate.

You pretty much mantion your options, I guess that keeps the load silence comming.
I do prefer Quark to Indesign by and large, but I guess that is because I got my first quark gig 12 years ago… And it was just so much more flexible, powerfull and precise than Page Maker on that LC III…
I still find Quark a total winner over InDesign, and it’s going to be interesting to see what they come up to after the “internal revolution”. The interface hasn’t changed much the last 12 years, so it looks are a bit dated. It’s powers are not.
When googling on “quark killer” I get loads of reviews, with more or less the same conclution, and not one other app mentioned…
But I guess this isn’t really what you were after?

Just one quick note.
If the whole film is an animation, set field dominance to none in the sequence settings. Then you won’t interlace your footage, which you do not want to do when you use stills.

(I guess the ability to edit formats other than DV is one of the perks of going “pro”.)

The generall opinion seems to say: Stay away from Norton. But all that changes as soon as your media is lost… I’d only go there as a total last resort, after trying anything else, though. (That is just before I hit the “Format” button…)
If there’s something to reset on the mainboard, try it. Ot sounds strange that the disks can’t even be seen. That is none out of two?
Sounds more like some kind of real hardwarefailure.
If you manage to start from the startup DVD and check “Systeminfo” are they there?
Have you tried the option-click during boot from the DVD to run hardware-test?
Have you booted from the disk-warrior CD to run it?
Can you boot from an external firewire drive to do problemsolving?
How full were the disks? If they were more than 90% full and you trid to defrag stuff, you’re maybe in som deep water. BUT I have experienced similar symptoms with too full disks. I did something stupid that forced the system to overwrite some necessary files. Luckyli I came back up with booting from an external drive, using disk-warrior, throwing away (ie: backing up) a lot of unneccesary trash and run a combo-update from apple.

If the whole sequence is made from stills and your resulting media is a DVD, you shpuld consider using another format thatn DV.
First, you do not want to interlace the pictures.
Secondly DV treats graphics real bad.Go for an uncompressed format like uncompressed 8 or 10 bit if you have the diskspace and set filed-dominance to none.
It will look a lot better on the resulting DVD.Cheers and merry X
