Please help! New to FCE HD.

You want HDV – Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50.

You do realize there is no HD DVD available? Your end product will not be HD only SD compressed to MPEG-2.

You will also need some software like iDVD to author your DVD. There are problems doing widescreen material, which this is, in iDVD.

Hello Tom, thank you very much for the reply.

Yeah i made my stills the size they are so that i could retain some high quality images for printed material etc… despite there being no HD DVD.

so both the easy setup and sequence setting need to be 1080i50?
Is there anyway around the widescreen problem in idvd?

As these are graphics, I’d just suggest playing with either the animation codec (if your machine can handle it) or the DVCPRO-HD codec to see if image quality improves.

hm…

Come to think of it. I’m not certain these are available in Express.

hello Gunleik, thanks for the post.

i had a look and there isn’t an animation codec or DVCPRO-HD in Express, so i guess it has to be the 1080i50.

although i seem to have a new problem, dont know if you know why this is happening. Basically i started a new project with the 1080i50 codec in both the easy setup and sequence setting, i did a little bit of editing and then saved the prjoect.

However today FCE HD wont load that project back up, it first says “unable to locate external device: Built in Audio” and then was FCE HD has actually loaded up it says “unable to open project file”
Any ideas whats going on?

The project file may have gotten corrupted, or one of the image files.

Start by trashing your preferences. Then launch the application, not the project, and see if it opens. In System Settings go to Memory and Cache and push up the still image allocation a bit. If you’re working with lots of very large images you might have to push it up a lot. Hopefully you have enough RAM. Then see if you can open the project from inside FCE.

Hello there.

launching the application loads up with a copy of the project i made a few minutes ago by double-clicking on one of the Autosave files (the very last Autosave file would not open so i deleted it). Loading the original version of the project from within FCE HD still gives me the “unable to open project files” message.

so now i basically have the original version of the project which will not open and a copy thats ok. I’ve trashed the preferences also.

so does that mean i’m okay to just go ahead using the copy? can i delete the original project file?

In regards to the still image cache, a novice question here, is this cache directly related to the amount of images in the project? i.e. set at 20% the cache says around 40MB, so does this mean at that setting i can only have 40MB worth of stills in the project?

It’s not the amount of still images in a project, but the stills that need to be loaded for an open sequence. This is very much dependent on the size of the image file. Different formats have different sizes for the same image. TIFF files seem to be very large. Multilayer PSD files can be very large. PNGs and PICTs seem to be quite a bit smaller.

ah i see, excellent, now we’re cooking.

A quick question about the problems you previously mentioned with iDVD and widescreen: Would it be possible, when the film is edited, to export it as a self-contained movie, save on cd and then take to a machine with something like DVD studio pro? does it work like that?

i ask because last year i tried something similar and when i took what i thought was my self-contained movie to another machine it wouldn’t load up as it said all the media was offline.

If it’s self-contained it’s not likely to fit on a CD unless the movie is quite short. A self-contained file should play on any Mac that supports DV media.
