As these are graphics, I’d just suggest playing with either the animation codec (if your machine can handle it) or the DVCPRO-HD codec to see if image quality improves.

    hm…

Come to think of it. I’m not certain these are available in Express.

    Check it. -;)

    And happy holidays.

December 24, 2005 at 9:31 am in reply to: Missing Plug ins

I’m not sure if this is what you have experienced, but:

Some plugs are installed in the folder inside the application. (Right click, choose “show content”, find the plug-ins folder).

As 5 replaces 4.5, these plugs are lost ver en upgrade an will need to be reinstalled.

I also had to throw away a bunch of audio component files to get started again.

    Ouch!

You need to hold C down during boot to start from the install DVD, or hold the option down to see available options.

I do _not_ mean to add insult to injury, but I hope you have a backup of your essential files. Generally defragmentation isn’t among the things one worries about in OSX as the system does it itself if left on.

Subrosasoft has a dicrecovery tool (to get files off a bad disk) which is supposed to work ok.

You could try hardwaretest from the install disc.
What were the symptoms prior to the techtool treatment?

    Happy holidays!

December 23, 2005 at 9:44 pm in reply to: Mac Mini — waste of $???

… and it will most likely _not_ be compatible with FCP or any other AltiVec hungry app for six – nine moths. Don’t do the guiena pig thing without getting paid for it – or if you don’t have a passion for being exactly that.

The reason Apple is considering releasing the mini and iBook as the first Intel machines, is because these are considered not for pro use. All media apps are heavily dependant on AltiVec and needs to be rewritten to get up to speed or: even run. The jury is still out as of Rosetta can emulate AltiVec code at all. (Rosetta is the emulation layer in the new osx)

I guess _if_ this happens in january, only iMovie, iDVD, iTunes (and hopefully iPhoto) will be rewritten at launch. FCP has to get back to it’s intell roots, as Logic and Shake and… will.

    Hm,just a hunch…

Is the second monitor one that craves dual-link? (Like the 30″ Cinema display)
What happens if you swap the connections? (Monitor 2 into prt 1 and vice versa)

I’d say:Go for it, if that’s what you can handle, but fill’er up with RAM and _do not forget_ the external firewire drive for media. Apparently FCP 5 does not handle media on the system disk at all.

I have been editing for quite a while on a 677 mhz Powerbook, and the mini should cripple that. Never used FCP 5 on it, though.

But: Do what you can afford and start getting some cuts done. The rest’ll come.

December 22, 2005 at 4:17 pm in reply to: to upgrade or not?

    Sure.

    No go…

The drives willnot stick, nor the folders.

    But thanks for the suggestion!

  • Thanks!

    So this means:
    AJA2
    + HDP
    + Breakout rackmount
    + 8ch AES/EBU to analogue DA/AD

is more or less the same specs?
    Am I right?

(I guess we’re comparing apples and oranges, but I’m just looking for the festure set at the moment. The one that can deliver when I order will sorta get it…)

The reason I’m thinking of the upgrade part is that I guess my current machine still have some time as an audio workhorse, after getting a new one for video. This might happen rather sooner than later, but I’ll need the capture card first.

    Catch22 -;)

I’d love to hear some AJA experinces from PAL land!

December 22, 2005 at 2:53 pm in reply to: MB Extreme (MB-X)

    Nope…

Like the PCI-X board, it’s on the BM wesite… (Checking)

“Work in 2K Feature Film Resolution

Multibridge has the speed of PCI Express combined with support for an Apple 30 inch Cinema display via the DVI-D dual link connection. That allows the full resolution of a 30 inch display to playback 2K feature film resolution, so you see pixel for pixel feature film resolution. (…)”

    Hm…
Guess this is a bit vague. You can play back… But not edit? (Given that you get a filmscan on a raid.)

December 22, 2005 at 10:02 am in reply to: MB Extreme (MB-X)

I had a nice mail from BM. Seems the chip that does the PCI-X to PCIe trick is delayed. Maybe it’ll be here in march. Bad news is better than no news.

    [Sean ONeil]
Since you have a PCI-X Mac, guess what? The major advantage of the Extreme isn’t for you. You don’t really need it. You can achive the same thing by getting a Decklink HD, an HDLink, and a regular Multibridge:”

HM. How do you know? -;)

In my case there are two big and one small thing holding me off your suggestion, but if there are workarounds I’ll be very happy!

    1. Currently I’m on PCI-X, but I can foresee myself mjoving to PCIe within a year. It would be nice to leave the PCI-X Mac in the sound studio and move the new PCIe to the post-lab without having to buy everything Decklink once more.

    2. The “Studio” has 8 audio outs (maybe even 16, if you can use the AES/EBU in paralell).

This means that one can mix surround and HD in the same studio – with a Nuendo/Cubase and FCP studio/Shake solution.

    That’s pretty nice… -;)

    The small thing:
    2k
I’m in dialogue with some film people who are looking for a place to post 2k.
This might not happen, but if it does… I’ll need the Studio.

    Why don’t you need it?

    -;)

    Cheers!
