If marketing to producers and production companies, of course it’s best not to put them on guard by appearing as a competitor. If the goal is to embark on your own projects, stick that chest out and call yourself a company.
For years, I set my company up as just a freelancer catering to companies and freelancers. It did me well until it was no longer cost effective. Now, if you go to my website, I’ve stock my chest out a bit and I’m calling it what it is.. a turn-key production company. I have no problem at all bidding against what use to be my clientele. I could say the market brought this on. Maybe it gave it a shove but making my opwn shows was the point all along. I just got distracted by a good hourly rate making their stuff.

AvidFX is comical at best. I was first excited to extrude some text and enjoy some vector coolness but again, it’s much quicker and easier today to just use good ole after effects as we have had to since Avid’s birth. It’s DVE moves bring on the old familiar aliasing all avid editors are familiar with so it’s of no use in my workflow. I, like many of us, was full of wishfull thinking when they purcahsed SoftImage. It’s obvious now they did not aquire it to utilize it but to consume it.
bummer.
The truth is, nobody sells more FCP systems today than Avid.

pan & scan is just a band aid for those of us who have been yelling about the DVE limitations for so many years. I equate it marquee as a titler… useless. It’s still quicker to do it in AE with far more options and capabilities.
Premiere offers more power here at this point. That’s only hilarious because it’s freakin’ true. -
We’re all use to keeping AE open for use as a DVE anyway. Avid just has not evolved in this area since 1995.

you’ll wanna use After Effects to do your image manipulation and animation. You can tinker with pan n scan as it will import images at their true size but with all it’s limitations, you quickly discard and hop into AE anyway. Avid still natively imports at your project settings size.

Hire out a better video company at a less fee and make money doing nothing.

It’s never been up to me how they wanna spend their billed time. I aim to please. I start when they show up and am done when they split. I’ve gotten paid great wages for drinkin, smokin and kickin ass on Halo. I have no problems with that.
