  • Charge for rendering time?

    Users,

Do you have any advice on charging or partially billing for rendering or encoding time for a project? Do you build it into the project cost, or add a technology fee? Do you charge at all?

What methods do you have or suggestions- any advice appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Jessica robbins

great question Jessica, but there is no ONE correct answer. Are you billing hourly? Do you have a ‘day rate’? Personally, and I do a lot of 3d, I factor it into my bid on the project. Where it can get sticky is revisions, in my experience. My company, SuperNova, has more than one CPU, so I can offload renders
and still get work done on the other computer. In this economy especially, I never want to be seen as nickel and diming my customers to death.

Another way to put it, is that when the project is being discussed, in YOUR mind you need to go through what it will take you to do the job. Bid carefully with all issues considered.

Some larger corporations may require you to ‘break down’ your bill. Even then, I may list rendering as a category, but charge $0 for it. Factor it into another area. I feel it again puts you in a good light to
basically ‘include’ that for nothing. (so to speak)

again Jessica, this is just one persons opinion. You need to assess all of your situation, and do what feels fair and right for that client….

    good luck

    One rate does wonders.
I’m a one man band and none of my time is worth less than other times. We can shoot, edit, animate, render, talk about their dog… it’s all one hourly rate.

It’s never been up to me how they wanna spend their billed time. I aim to please. I start when they show up and am done when they split. I’ve gotten paid great wages for drinkin, smokin and kickin ass on Halo. I have no problems with that.
