I start by laying my keepers on a timeline and then looking at how much I really have to work with. I then go back and lay out my bites and music to time. I now know how long my finished piece will be and I have it’s story down. Then it’s just a matter of following or creating that story with b-rool, grafix and layers of love till done.

Then, play your timeline. Your beat is the kick drum and you need to hit it to the frame on the fly. Yes, you can scrub a couple of frames as you get better at this but you will soon be able to hit the attack of that kick on the frame. That’s it. Now you backtime the sting and do the same. Booya.

You make your way passed the receptionist to some sort of creative director, production manager or head hancho and make your schpill vrbally. If they are remotly interested, they’ll have you send it to them and the receptionist will not trash it when it shows up unsolicited. You will not only save money this way, your reel will actually be watched. You can save the random reel sending for email spamming on a rainy day. Nothin’ wrong with that at all. An email being deleted costs you nothing but some time. You’ll be volunteering time to this either way.

The bottom line is half of nuthin’ is nuthin’. If they thought they could make money from this, they’d surely have no problem making more of a profit by paying you your day rate and keeping all those awesome advertising dollars.

Just politely explain that your internship daze are over and state your day rate. He’ll say no thank you and you’ll find this to be the most diplomatic way of telling a grinder to kick rocks.
