Seems like setting to -20db in a night club is an automatic consideration. -6db leaves you no headroom whatsoever. An attenuator would have helped, but not at -6dbs. I wouldn’t even do talking head interviews at -6dbs.

Nano sounds great, but what about audio? I will need to get audio onto the footage from a camera source that has no audio, so I guess the XDR is a better bet?

Once again, I responded to a post without reading the last two posts. I want to apologize. I would like to hear some of your reasoning applied to using sun-guns in movable camera situations as well?

I like the reasoning in the article. I also want to mention Doug Jensen’s recommendations of generally using -3db as a best setting in Vortex Media’s DVD on the EX1 and EX3: He purports similar reasoning. As for myself, I use -3db as I often use sun-guns on my cameras while shooting surgery, and therefore am likely to get changes in foot-candles when maneuvering the jibs. I often have to use auto iris as well, because I am not able to touch the camera for long periods of time. So if I am in a situation where I am washing the scene out or there are unforgiving hot spots, I want the leverage of being able to fix it in post, and a darker picture is always desirable in that situation. You can’t fix an overexposed picture or overexposed spots. So -3db is the best setting, in my mind, for most situations, even without sun-guns, even outside of surgery. Its worked well for me and I advocate listening to Doug Jensen’s reasoning as well.

I really recommend you get Vortex Media’s DVD instructional program for the EX1 <https://www.vortexmedia.com/DVD_EX1.html> and it will help you think through this process. I indeed think it important to use Browser as a means for keeping track and not writing over BPAV files.

Since the beginning of digital audio, no one can use 0 level as a standard, unlike analog audio. At a maximum -12db is acceptable when doing interviews, but -20db is what most pro audio guys record at so they have the headroom in case a loud noise makes the audio peak.

Do you think this banding is caused by the trial mode from Calibrated? That didn’t happen on mine. I had to use Calibrated for a corrupted BPAV folder once. Therefore if my friend downloads AppDelete and deletes the plug-in, do you think it will work? Or should he just trash the plug-in?

Sony is nuts not to market by way of their workflow improvements and educate their customers. Do they even want us as customers or do they just want to sell us product and have us go away? I use to love them, but I am really sour on Sony these days as they seem like a big uncaring machine.
