Amen Herb. Those three items are much more important than any technology.

I’ve seen a lot of videos over the years that attempt to explain what it takes to be a good editor. However, about a year ago I stumbled onto one piece that is so good that it should be mandatory viewing for anyone learning the craft.

  • if you’re getting all of your stock shots from getty, you could use a simple utility app (like file renamer) to batch change the names of the hi res files from the full name to just the clip number so that your hi-res and low-res clip names match. And then once the file names match the re-link process should be automated.

  • Your CPU is older and you only have 16 gigs of RAM so that may be the biggest factor. Also, where is your media stored and what type of media are you working with? Are you using a Raid or a single drive? You may also have a bottleneck of data.

My GTX 970 is working in tandem with an i7-5820k CPU, 32 gigs of RAM and my media is playing back from a TB2 raid at around 500 MB/sec and that allows for smooth full res playback of Sony 4k media with Luts attached.

  • [Jon Manterola Herbozo] “I have a 2009 mac pro 4.1 with EL CAPITAN and with a recently installed NVIDIA GTX 970 4GB, I installed Nvidia drivers (346.03.15f09) and CUDA driver Version: 8.0.90 “

I also have the GTX 970 and the most noticeable performance is smooth hi-res playback of all media without rendering.

If you’re not able to take advantage of the real time playback then my guess is that the Mac you have it in is not powerful enough. The benefit of a better graphics card will be mitigated if you don’t also have a fast CPU and plenty of RAM.

  • I doubt Adobe will go through the effort to improve the proxy workflow since fast computers allow for a proxy free work flow. Proxies are a temporary solution.

one step that might help is to make your sequence the same frame rate as the trailers. Almost all trailers are 23.976 and not 29.97. You could also make your preview file setting pro res or dnxhd to see your real output in premiere.

Also, download the original trailer and see if that plays ok. I’ve downloaded that trailer and it plays perfectly in and out of premiere on my system.

October 20, 2017 at 4:52 am in reply to: Why does 50% 8K video look the same as 200% HD

If you take the time to watch the entire Yedlin explanation video it will become clear that there’s no actual viewing advantage to the ever increasing resolutions. Currently many productions shoot 4k but deliver in HD and so the 4k allows for punch ins without losing quality.

So perhaps down the road when it becomes standard to deliver 4k masters the 6k or 8k will serve the same purpose as 4k today but the Yedlin analysis makes it clear that there’s no actual viewing improvement with the higher resolutions.

[andy patterson] “I would rather just make my own graphics. I imagine other people feel the same way. “

Andy, i think you’re actually in the minority. When working on projects that need robust graphics I have no time or inclination to build those graphics from scratch. And if there’s no budget for a real motion graphic artist my first step is to go to Videohive and acquire an AE template that will fit my needs and that I can then customize.

Adobe is just bringing that step in house which makes sense for them. Also, traditionally the achilles heel for all NLE’s has been the titling tool because of it’s always been a separate program within the program. At least Adobe has improved it to the point where titling is seamless within the edit.
