You can’t edit 4K mxf if you put the media files on the desktop. You have to put all media on an external drive or raid. If you use the proxy workflow you can put the media on any fast drive and if you want to skip the proxy workflow and edit the 4K files directly you’ll need a drive or raid that has fast thruput. Sony’s list of xavc recording formats states the data rates of each setting.

This forum has proven that there’s a wide variety of workflows and they all seem to work just fine according to those that post here.

I’d agree with your overall assessment that the business is a variety of niche areas but I think I’d make an exception for films and tv. The film and tv industry is not just large but also influential. I’ve found that the television production workflow seems to prevail at many post facilities.

And my definition of a tv production workflow is one where all interviews are transcribed and through use of those transcripts the a-roll is built, then music, b-roll and SFX and VFX added.

I spent years working in television and so I’m influenced by that background. So I’m sure that there’s plenty of editors who have no need or interest in the tv model workflow.

  • Completely normal for DNxHR and ProRes to be large in file size. Both of these codec formats are mastering formats so the quality level is very high and that leads to large file sizes.

Unless you have a particular reason for it, you should keep audio out of nested sequences. The main reason being that your workflow will be very inefficient.

[Jordan Kole] “Can Premiere edit in .mxf? I don’t think so but not I’m not sure!”

Not sure why you think Premiere would have a problem with mxf. The key to your being able to have a smooth workflow with sony mxf files is having a fast CPU, a qualified GPU, plenty of RAM and a fast media storage device, i.e, a raid. If you have all of those items in place the 4k workflow is without issue.

  • A second for DNxHR. If you’re on Windows 10 there’s no need for quicktime at all.

If your source footage isn’t uncompressed to start with then there’s no reason to render uncompressed.

I too always create H264 files for approval. They’re quick to render and easy to post. If this type of work is common for your clients then I would advocate that you get a larger amount of storage so that if you want to create hi-res renders it doesn’t have any real impact on your workflow.

October 26, 2017 at 5:22 pm in reply to: Creating Proxies from Sony FS5 4K footage

Your proxies have to match the 4k files exactly with regards to audio channels. If you have 4 channels of audio on the 4k files then your ingest setting must also be four channel. When I made proxies I had to create custom ingest presets with correct audio channel information because the default ingest options didn’t have 4 channel audio. You create the custom ingest presets in Encoder and then export the preset to a location that you can steer to in the proxy settings pop up in premiere.

  • Jake, unless I’m misreading your post your solution is to simply use replace media with the pngs.

Control click on any png in your bin that you need to replace, select replace media, choose your new png. After you replace the media, any instance of that png in any sequence will be replaced with the new png.

Impressive that you’ve been able to use that workflow without issue since you are seriously lacking in RAM. I work with a lot of 4k footage and Premiere consistently uses around 30 gigs of RAM.
