transcode 4k mxf files?
Posted by Deleted User on October 27, 2017 at 3:30 pmPlanning a shoot in 4k with a Sony X70 camera. The files come off the camera encoded as .mxf.
I’m going to be editing on a pretty fast PC running Adobe Premiere.. May also do image stabilization in Adobe AfterEffects
What is the best workflow for editing? Should i transcode to an editing codec and if so which one?
Can Premiere edit in .mxf? I don’t think so but not I’m not sure!
Final export format will be .mp4 to be played back on media players.
Thank you!!

Not sure why you think Premiere would have a problem with mxf. The key to your being able to have a smooth workflow with sony mxf files is having a fast CPU, a qualified GPU, plenty of RAM and a fast media storage device, i.e, a raid. If you have all of those items in place the 4k workflow is without issue.

October 28, 2017 at 3:42 pmI didn’t know this! So after I shoot i bring the contents of the memory card to the desktop and edit those files directly without transcoding?

October 28, 2017 at 4:26 pmYou can’t edit 4K mxf if you put the media files on the desktop. You have to put all media on an external drive or raid. If you use the proxy workflow you can put the media on any fast drive and if you want to skip the proxy workflow and edit the 4K files directly you’ll need a drive or raid that has fast thruput. Sony’s list of xavc recording formats states the data rates of each setting.

October 28, 2017 at 4:52 pmOk cool! How do you do the proxy workflow? Does premiere generate proxies itself?
