The paint tool works on the actual layer, as a result motion tracking applies after the paint tool, so your burn mark will move around. (I think)

There are a couple of ways around this:

You could either pre-compose your footage and apply motion stablisation inside the pre-comp, then re-wobble it later – see Andrew Kramer’s demon face tutorial for the best way to do that.

The alternative is to create a new layer, apply the motion track data to that layer and use Vector Paint and transfer modes to add the burn mark.

You could use AE to animate the paths for the orbs then transfer the position data to Particle Illusion.

I’ve not seen that tutorial, but use the same method myself for adding AE 3D layers.

It may be that be trying to drag your layer into the comp to replace the light, AE doesn’t want to switch on the 3D-ness automatically.

Have you tried leaving the lights in the composition, and using the expression pickwhip to control the AE 3D layer position?

    Thanks Brian

Come to think of it, it was around the time I started with multiply booles that I noticed the speed issue. Thanks very much for the advice,

Have you tried a garbage matte of the guy in front of the window and then applying a key? I’ve been doing some sky replacement and found a luma key in my case saved a lot of roto effort.

Do’h. You see this is what happens when you have two forums open at the same time. Apologies and please ignore.

Thanks Aaron. I was burned once quite badly by Adobe, so am always nervous when buying software now.

I think I’m going to go ahead. You know what its like, once you set your eyes on a new toy, all the old ones just don’t seem worth playing with anymore 🙂

We have this exact greenscreen at work and it’s excellent. Generally, it’s pinned taut against a wall with the floor folded back. Most the of time we just use it for hand/shoulder shots, but because of the space we have, we have the flexbility to go larger. We do need proper lights for it, although not when we use Adobe’s Visual Communicator. Not exactly the best key on the market, but for quick, live-keying, turnaround videos it’s excellent.

Learning to fold it up does take practice though, there are times when I wish we’d also bought the next size down.
