AE for orbs?
I am thinking of using AE for orbs circling around a character, but I do have the option of Particle Illusion for the same project. What are the thoughts of the members?

i don’t have pi, so i may not be able to give you the best advice on this… but if you need the particles to be 3d and revolve/move behind the subject, particular (from trapcode.com) might be a good option.
with particular you can define an obscuring layer to create the illusion of the particles moving behind the subject.
for an illustration, check this thread out by graymachine a few months ago.

You could use AE to animate the paths for the orbs then transfer the position data to Particle Illusion.
