Thank you for sharing this. I love a crib sheet. And learned something immediately.

I didn’t know about “⌘” + “alt” + “/” to remove expressions. I’ve been doing it the long way all this time.?‍♂️

That looks like it is using the difference layer transfer mode.

Make sure both shapes are on different layers and they both need to be white. Then set a background layer to white as well.

Once you’re all set up, use each layer’s transfer mode set to Difference.

This tutorial I made for CreativeCow might help a little too, although I don’t talk about the Difference mode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqKyyi7nXBw

  • If you use “From Start” as the texture time each particle will use the starting frame of your texture, which is what you’ve found. You can loop this texture before it gets to CC Particle World.

There’s nothing stopping you duplicating the layer or particle effect and texture. That would give you two lots of particles. There’s a random option in Extras so they won’t be identifical.

Really nice. Well done. Although it’s giving me flashbacks to Saturday mornings in the 80s.

The flare is a 2D effect, so you need to have it on a regular layer at the top of your comp. Then use this 3D expression from Dan Ebberts to have the lens flare stick to the light

    thisComp.layer(“Light 1”).toComp([0,0,0]);

I cover it myself in this mini tutorial: https://youtu.be/xlYwhYXGsD8

  • Nice one, glad you got a solution. Fancy posting a screenshot of your settings and end result in case someone else is trying to achieve the same?

You’ve got it all working, looks really nice. If you set the bottom layer to use the top layer as an Alpha Inverted Track Matte, then it will cut out a nice soft swathe from the bottom aurora.

  • Hi Stephanie,

If I understand correctly, you want 48 frames from a video of a rotating object. Honestly i don’t think you need to bother with Posterize time or anything complicated.

Drop your video into a new composition.

Then go to Layer > Time > Enable Time Remapping.

Two new keyframes appear on the timeline. Copy the second keyframe to your clipboard.

Then use Go To Time to set the current time indicator to 48 frames.

Highlight the Time Remapping value and paste in your copied keyframe.

So what you’ve done is speed up the video so that it runs through its entire length in just 48 frames. You can now render out of the first 48 frames of your comp and you will have evenly spaced, rotational shots.
