23.98fps is the correct video rate for 24p, because NTSC is 29.97fps not 30.00fps. To convert to PAL is easy!

Open the movie in Cinema Tools. Hit “conform” and select 25fps.

Now take the movie to FCP and scale it up to PAL dimensions, render, and play out to tape!

Yes, those tools do help for HDV also. There’s even an HDV 4:2:0 mode in them.

I’d shoot HDV for best chroma key, and if you do the key in HD and then downconvert afterwards, you’ll get the best key.

Any!

The patterns just govern which is the first frame in the sequence, but the cadence produced is always 3:2

DV capture over firewire is just a file transfer. It’s just copying the compressed data off the tape onto your mac’s hard drive. There is no loss in this process at all. Similarly, if you then play out those captured clips back to tape, there is no loss. It’s only if you add effects or transitions that you can get a loss, and this, at least for one pass, is very transparent.

The plugins for the book were written by me. When they went to get put on the CD, some PC user broke them, hence Telly put them on his website for download so you can use them. I see he’s updated the site and I can no longer find the link, so I’ll email him and ask if he can help.
