That PhotoJPEG is not RT in all it’s incarnations is a problem that Apple should fix as number 1 priority. It’s a fabulous codec, that Apple themselves use at low rez and size for “Offline RT” so there’s no reason at all why they shouldn’t make it work for full size and quality.

Well, Q-rez has got to be dead though, hasn’t it? Announced over a year ago and still no sign of it other than in the banner adverts, and all mention removed from the AJA site? And even if it does magically appear, there needs to be a software equivalent or else media interoperability becomes a big issue.

I’d go for at least a 23″ LCD. Two are nice, but at least one is superb, especiallly when dealing with any HD content as you’ve got more rez than the needed 1920×1080.

Field orders are usually codec dependent, but here with my Decklink card, PAL uncompressed 8bit and 10bit are upper, and NTSC uncompressed 8bit and 10bit are lower.

PAL and NTSC DV, and DVD are lower. Indeed, all DV based formats are lower.

I’m always very suspicious of cameras that ship with the edge detail on full, or turned up so much it’s visible. All the HDV footage I’ve seen has had the edge detail up, and indeed, the demo footage from Sony I got had visible edge enhancement, sort of like what you get on a DVD mastered with a 14″ portable TV in mind – ouch. Edge enhancement is neither useful nor clever, and, especially as compression schemes work better with softer pictures, it’s realy advisable to add just enough in post, if needed.

Stanardly the Xserve RAID is for one computer only. If you want to be able to have multiple computers access the data, they can either file share from the computer that is attached to it, and this is, unfortunately not suitable for video editing, or you need to introduce Xsan to the network.

Xsan is a piece of software that will allow multiple people to read and write to your Xserve RAID. However, you need extra hardware, a computer to act as the MetaData controller, and a fibre switch, which can make an Xserve quite expensive. A 24p DVD has the same “motion” as a DVD made at 29.97fps from 24p footage. All that is different is that in a 24pDVD, the pulldown is added by the player and not recorded on the disc. This means that you can record more on the disc for the same quality, or a higher quality for the same running time.

The quality difference is in the less compression used to make the DVD, and hence it looks (or can look) visibly better.
