Yes, quality setting at 75%. At that setting it’s a y’CbCr codec, 4:2:2 low compression. At 100% it changes to an RGB 4:4:4 codec with low compression.

The frame size he’s using is about the same height as PAL DV, but three times as wide, so with a PhotoJPEG codec, any RAID that can play 3 DV streams should handle one stream of this, or for uncompressed, any RAID that would handle three uncompressed streams should be fine, say, 100MB/s, which is certainly doable without going to fibre, which here is giving about 300MB/s playbacks.

If the internal SATA won’t play it, I doubt severely a single SCSI will. You need a RAID of somekind. Did you try PhotoJPEG75% codec. It’s excellent and much lower in data rate.

Walter, it’s not that it’s DV on an uncompressed timeline, but that he’s using a HD sized timeline with the DV codec. When instead he uses a uncompressed timeline, the data rate goes through the roof and his hard drive just doesn’t have the speed. That’s why I was suggesting a compressed codec of high quality like PhotoJPEG@75%.
Unfortunately the size he’s using 2048×576 is too big for any of the compressed HD codec like DVCproHD either, so he’s pretty stuck.

Try the PhotoJPEG@75% codec and I think you might get playback ok or your internal SATA. If not, you’ll need a RAID of drives. I don’t think a single SCSI will be any better than your internal SATA.

The DV codecs are designed only for a fixed size, and in PAL, that’s 720×576. If you need to work in a sequence with larger dimensions like you’re doing, I’d suggest either the uncompressed codecs, or if hard disc space is an issue, try using PhotoJPEG@755 quality. I think that will work great for you.

That’s just so tough to tell until some of the new machines are announced. I’m guessing that there’s going to be probably new G5 powermacs / iMacs before they start to swap over to Macintel, but the powerbooks / iBooks might swap straight over. As to when this will happen, hopefully sooner than later.

I personally think an architecture change, in this case, is less of a bother than a change in OS. The major problem with bugs is changes in the API. In this case, the API remains the same.
