Question about the XL2’s 24p mode and FCP
I ordered an XL2 earlier this morning and I’ve been thinking about it all day.
I’m very excited about the 24p feature (it’s one of the main reasons I chose this camera).My question is this;
When shooting in 24p, does the camera actually record the information at
24 frames/sec on the tape or does it convert it to the standard 29.97?
My main concern is during the capture process will it affect my timecode?
Especially when editing 30p or 30i content together with 24p.TIA

The camera shoots at 29.97fps.

As a clarification, when shooting 24P doesn’t the XL2 shoot at 24P, but then records it with the 3:2 pulldown padding to provide the 29.97fps to be recorded to tape?

That would be correct
and be true for Standard Def and HD cameras that use tape — they cannot directly record to tape at 24p (23.98) so all of them need to add additional frames so that the footage can be played back in the native frame rate for the chosen tape stock — in this example NTSC is played by on a TV at 29.97 FPS / Drop Frame so to “trick the eye” frames are placed back into smooth the motion and time.Decks such as the Sony HDCAM SR and Panasonic D5 can record 24fps direct to tape (and cost accordingly)

Should explain practically everything. The XL2 works just the same as the DVX100, but names the modes differently.

the HDCAM spec allows for recording a number of frame rate options that include 60i
